Kingsbridge: Greek Heritage Month Celebrated

The sound of clapping echoed through St. Peter the Apostle Greek Orthodox Church in Kingsbridge on Thursday, April 16, as rows of Greek American families turned their attention to a troupe of young dancers. A large blue and white Greek flag hung at the front of the room, while families waved similar smaller flags from their seats.

This week, we asked readers their opinions on New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s veto, on First Amendment grounds, as reported, of City Council Bill Intro 0175B, sponsored by City Councilman Eric Dinowitz (C.D. 11), that would require the NYPD to establish a plan containing considerations on whether, when, and to what extent security perimeters (buffer zones) could be established outside educational facilities.

Norwood: Discarded Batteries Cause Garbage Truck Fire

A fire broke out in a garbage truck in the Norwood section of The Bronx on Monday morning, April 27. Resident Marcos Sierra who, as reported, previously ran for City Council in District 11, shared the attached photo of the fire which ignited inside an NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) truck. “Be careful what you throw out!!” Sierra wrote.

UPDATE Mayor Vetoes Dinowitz Bill on Protesting Around Educational Facilities

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani vetoed on Friday, April 24, City Council Intro 175-B-2026 sponsored by local Councilman Eric Dinowitz (C.D. 11), on free speech grounds. The bill, along with Intro 0001-2026, passed in the council in March. The former would require the police commissioner to establish a plan to address and contain the risk of physical obstruction, physical injury, intimidation, and interference at educational facilities while preserving and protecting the rights to free speech, assembly, and protest, according to Dinowitz’s office.

Bronx Christians recently observed Good Friday and and celebrated Easter Sunday, marking the end of 40 days of Lent which, according to various sources, is a period of repentance, the purpose of which is the preparation of believers for Easter through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, as well as mortifying the flesh, simply living, and self-denial.
