Fordham Heights: Man Exonerated after 26 Years in Case of Shooting at East 183rd Subway Station

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced on Wednesday, May 10, that a Bronx judge vacated the attempted murder conviction of a Bronx man who served 26 years in prison, after investigations by her office’s Conviction Integrity Bureau, and by The Innocence Project, found that the man had been wrongfully convicted due to ineffective defense counsel. Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson and the Bronx Economic Development Corporation (BXEDC) announced the launch of the first-of-its-kind environmental sustainability challenge on Monday, May 8. BXEDC representatives said the Bronx Green Action Challenge will award up to $1 million to a Bronx-based college or university for the development and implementation of a project or set of projects that improve campus sustainability, and reduce that institution’s environmental footprint. Video footage of flames and smoke seen on the elevated subway platform of the Kingsbridge Road subway station raised alarm bells on Tuesday, April 18. A spokesperson for the MTA later explained to Norwood News that a smoke condition was reported at around 8.05 a.m. and that the 4 train service was suspended until 8:57 a.m. between Woodlawn and Burnside Avenue while FDNY investigated the incident.
