Day 1: Nurses at Three NYC Private Hospital Systems Strike as Gov. Hochul Declares “State of Emergency”

Nearly 15,000 nurses across the City walked off the job before 7 a.m. on Monday Jan. 12, as nurses from three private hospitals Montefiore, Mount Sinai, and New York-Presbyterian, kicked off the largest nurses strike in New York City history. The strike was anticipated as negotiations over contracts failed to reach a resolution by the stated deadline. Read more about the nurses’ concerns in our previous story here. 

Help Prevent Subway Tragedies

At least two men have died, and three others have been injured in a series of unrelated train-related incidents that took place across Bronx train systems in the past month, according to City officials. No criminality is suspected in relation to the incidents involving the two deceased men, while one of the surviving injured victims was pushed in front of or against a moving train. Meanwhile, City officials are reminding New Yorkers that help is available for those who may be having thoughts of ending their lives.

Bronx Off Duty Female Police Officer Arrested

Police said an off-duty New York City employee was arrested and charged on Thursday, Jan. 15, at around 6 p.m. in the confines of the 44th Precinct, which covers parts of the Grand Concourse, Bronx Terminal Market, and Yankee Stadium.

UPDATE Fordham Heights: Burnside Avenue Building Partially Collapses

A building in the Fordham Heights section of The Bronx partially collapsed on Monday, Jan. 12, NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) officials said. It follows a previous partial building collapse at a NYCHA building in Mott Haven in October 2025, a partial building collapse in Morris Heights in December 2023, another construction site collapse at an Orchard Beach construction site in July 2023, and a wall collapse in Olinville in which six people were injured the same month and year.
