Norwood: Gillibrand Secures $1.371 Million in Federal Funding to Upgrade MMCC Main Building

Participants in Mosholu Montefiore Community Center (MMCC)’s Restorative Justice Program were joined by community members as well as participants in other programs offered by the Norwood-based community center for the 2023 Bronx Paint Fest Party on Saturday, May 13. During the free event, organized by NYC Mural Arts Project and other groups, the group spent the afternoon painting the mural, which had as its theme positive mental health, on one of the outdoor walls of the Center which is located at 3450 Dekalb Avenue between East Gun Hill Road and Kossuth Avenue in Norwood. In addition to the mural painting, there was also music, food, games, and a general focus on wellness.

DC9 Painters & Allied Trades to Hold Glaizer Recruitment Drive in February

District Council 9 (DC9) is conducting a formal Glazier apprentice recruitment drive, which began Jan. 30. The drive will be conducted at the union’s training center in Long Island City and will cover the Hudson Valley, Long Island, and New York City regions, and will last through Feb. 12.

Black Lives Matter Call for Justice for Eric Duprey, Man Killed in Police Sting Operation

Six days before NYPD Sgt. Erik Duran of the NYPD narcotics unit was to go on trial for the 2023 manslaughter of 30-year-old Bronxite, Eric Duprey, members of Black Lives Matter (BLM) stood outside the Bronx Criminal Courthouse vowing to attend every day of the trial, together with Duprey’s family. Meanwhile, members of the NYPD who had attended prior pre-trial court proceedings relating to the case were expected to show up once again in support of Duran. Duprey died amid a police sting operation in the Fordham Manor section of The Bronx.

NY Legal Assistance Group Urges U.S. Senate to Reject Increased ICE & Border Patrol Funding

As the U.S. Senate prepares to vote on a funding bill for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Tuesday, Jan. 27, the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) joined hundreds of civil rights groups in signing on to an open letter demanding that Congress members refuse to vote for any FY2026 appropriations bill that includes increased funding for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Border Patrol.
