Inquiring Photographer: Thoughts on Pilot Program Allowing Some Lightweight E-Bikes in Parks

This week, we asked readers their thoughts on the pilot program launched by the City’s Parks’ department in June 2023, as reported, which allows Class 1, 2 and 3 e-bikes and lighter-weight e-scooters on city park drives and greenways. A map is available at nyc.gov/parks/ebikes, showing the greenways and drives that fall under the program, along with a multilingual survey to obtain feedback.

No D Train Service during upcoming Weekends between 161st St.-Yankee Stadium and Norwood-205th St.

MTA officials have advised that due to more needed maintenance work, there will be no D train service operating between the 161st Street-Yankee Stadium subway station and the Norwood-205th Street station during the following weekends: Friday, Sept. 29, from 11.30 p.m. through Monday, Oct. 2, at 5 a.m. The D service will run between Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue and 161st Street-Yankee Stadium, the last stop. Documentary Film “1.5 Million” Deals with Illiteracy in The Bronx

There was outrage in The Bronx when the last general-interest bookstore, Barnes & Noble, shut down permanently in 2017. Many Bronxites saw it as evidence that the borough is not viewed in a positive light and is forgotten when it comes to its intellectual curiosity. For filmmaker Gregory Hernandez, the turmoil gave him an idea to tell a story about illiteracy in the borough. The result is the film “1.5 Million: A Bronx Documentary” which, as preadvised, screened at the Pelham Parkway-Van Nest branch of the New York Public Library (NYPL) on Aug. 28.

UPDATE Friends of Devoe Park Launch Art Workshop Series Starting Sept. 16

Friends of Devoe Park (FoDP), a volunteer group organized in 2017 by CATALYST, a City Parks Foundation subsidiary, is kicking off an art workshop series, coinciding with the back-to-school season. The series comprises two events, the first of which takes place on Saturday, Sept. 16. According to the organizers, around ten local children will receive “a paint and arts bundle” to learn how to paint and later to take home their finished visions of Devoe Park.

The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) opened an investigation into the death of Eric Duprey, who died on Wednesday, Aug. 23, following what was described as “an encounter with members of the New York City Police Department (NYPD)” in the Fordham Manor section of The Bronx. The announcement was made regarding the investigation on Thursday, Aug. 24.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams joined New York City Corporation Counsel Sylvia Hinds-Radix, and Police Commissioner Edward Caban on Tuesday, Sept. 5, to announce that the City had reached a settlement relating to the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests and that the NYPD has implemented new practices to keep New Yorkers safe, and to respect every person’s first amendment rights to free speech, to better address what were described as the unique challenges they say arise during spontaneous protests.

NYC Emergency Management Department (EMS) and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOH) are advising New Yorkers to take precautions to beat the heat following a heat advisory by the National Weather Service (NWS), from 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7. Hot and humid conditions are in the forecast from Tuesday to Thursday, with heat index values in the upper 90s across the City, according to NWS.

CM Dinowitz Breaks Down Highlights of $107 Billion City Budget & $30 Million for C.D. 11

City Councilman Eric Dinowitz (C.D. 11) gave a budget presentation to district residents on Wednesday, Aug. 2, highlighting some of the local initiatives that will benefit from funding, following the adoption of the City’s $107 billion budget for the 2024 fiscal year. The councilman went over the city budget process, discussed the major highlights from the latest adopted city budget, and broke down some of the $30 million plus in discretionary funding for capital projects and other funding secured for C.D. 11, in conjunction with Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson.
