NYC DOC Confirms Two Additional Deaths on and in transit to Rikers Island

After NYC Department of Correction (DOC) confirmed on Saturday, June 21, that two additional people have died on or in transit to Rikers Island on June 20, advocates for those incarcerated at the jail are asking the mayor to take immediate action to address overcrowding, particularly ahead of the imminent heatwave.

Zohran Mamdani, one of the top contenders to win the Democratic mayoral primary on June 24, campaigned in the Norwood section of The Bronx last month alongside State Sen. Gustavo Rivera (S.D. 33), some members of the Democratic Socialists of America, Bronx Youth Impact, and other volunteers. Mamdani was endorsed on June 18 by former mayoral candidate Maya Wiley, which followed prior endorsements by former U.S. presidential candidate and Independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), as reported.

Celebrating 25 years of basketball, community, and legacy at Orchard Beach, the 25th anniversary tournament of “Hoops in the Sun” (HITS) proudly tips off at Orchard Beach on Saturday, June 21, at 11.30 a.m. until 7 p.m. and continues Sunday, June 22, also between 11.30 a.m. and 7 p.m. HITS promoters said, “For a quarter century, HITS has combined elite basketball with grassroots impact, mentorship, and legacy.” The promoters explained that HITS Inc. is a community-based basketball program/tournament held at Orchard Beach, providing recreational and leadership opportunities for youth and adults since 2000.
