UPDATE Norwood: Oval Security Cameras Still in Limbo; Sen. Rivera Asks for Prioritization after Teen Murder

The status of when and where security cameras will be installed in the Williamsbridge Oval park in Norwood remains in limbo ten days after the fatal stabbing of 14-year-old Ángel Miguel Mendoza Hernández in the Oval on Aug. 5. As reported, State Sen. Gustavo Rivera (S.D. 33) wrote to NYC Parks Commissioner Iris Rodriguez on Aug. 12 asking that funding requested by NYC Parks for cameras which was secured last year be utilized to install the cameras as a matter or priority.

Norwood: Healing Circle Held After Murder of Ángel Mendoza Hernández 14 Disrupted by Bikers

As various community and wellness leaders gathered at a circle of healing event in the Williamsbridge Oval park in Norwood on Tuesday evening, Aug. 12, in a pre-organized effort to help local youth process their feelings following the fatal stabbing of 14-year-old Ángel Miguel Mendoza Hernández inside the packed park one week earlier, the peaceful gathering was abruptly and seemingly deliberately and maliciously disrupted by a group of motorized bike riders.

Attorney General James Urges New Yorkers to Be Cautious of Fake Bad Bunny Concert Tickets

New York Attorney General Letitia James issued a consumer alert on Tuesday, Aug. 12, warning New Yorkers of fake or invalid tickets to concerts by Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, otherwise known as the artist “Bad Bunny.” A popular Puerto Rican rap artist, Bad Bunny has a huge fan base in New York and around the world and is performing concerts in San Juan, Puerto Rico through Sept. 14.

Shocked and outraged at the murder of 14-year-old Ángel Miguel Mendoza Hernández who, as reported, was fatally stabbed in broad daylight in a packed Williamsbridge Oval park in Norwood on Tuesday, Aug. 5, in a violent gang assault, the Norwood community is taking various steps to support the teenager’s grieving family and enhance park security to prevent further tragedies.

Woman Robbed inside Van Cortlandt Village Bank

Police have released two photos of a man they say robbed a 20-year-old woman inside a bank in Van Cortlandt Village. Police said officers from the 50th Precinct were called to the Ridgewood Savings Bank, located at 3899 Sedgwick Avenue at Gouverneur Avenue at 2.47 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5, 2024.

Bronx Man Charged with Narcotics Offenses Resulting in Death Used Stash House Occupied by Child

Federal prosecutors announced Friday, Aug. 1, that a 34-year-old Bronx man, Estherlyn Frias, a/k/a “Platinum,” a/k/a “Silver,” was charged with drug dealing resulting in death in connection with the “overdose” of a victim in Greenwich, Connecticut last month. Prosecutors allege the man ran the drug operation out of his partner’s home where a young child slept in close proximity to potent narcotics.
