Officials from The Fire Department of New York said 10 people were transported to hospital following a motor vehicle collision on Monday afternoon in Baychester, south of Co-op City, and one further person was also injured but not hospitalized.

The incident was reported at 3.18 p.m. at Einstein Loop North and Hutchinson River Parkway East on Monday, May 15, and involved four separate vehicles.

An NYPD spokeswoman said an 80-year-old man was driving a jeep traveling northbound on Hutchinson River Parkway when he collided at the intersection with a yellow school bus, driven by a 72-year-old woman.

The spokeswoman said, “In the jeep, it looks like you had an operator and you had a front passenger and a rear passenger. All three of those individuals were taken to Jacobi. The front passenger is listed in critical condition.”

She added, “The school bus was occupied by the operator, an attendant, and it had four students on board of that bus. All those occupants are in stable condition and they were all taken to Jacobi.”

The spokesperson continued, “After the bus and the jeep collided, the jeep also collided with two other vehicles, a Chrysler Dan, and you had the operator [who] refused medical attention at the scene, and then also a white van and the operator of that vehicle was taken to Jacobi in stable condition.”

An FDNY spokesperson said units were assigned to the location for reports of a trauma, and initially said seven patients were transported to Jacobi Medical Center in Morris Park. This was later updated to 10 patients. The spokesperson said the patients’ respective conditions and descriptions were unknown at the time we contacted the department.

Photos and video recorded by users of the Citizens’ App showed at least two vehicles with what appeared to be serious damage following an apparent collision.

The NYPD said the cause of the accident was being actively investigated by the department’s highway unit.
