UPDATE Ceasefire Begins after Bronx Politicians Join Various Rallies Defending their Stances on the Middle East

A four-day ceasefire deal brokered between Israel and Hamas, which was originally due to commence on Nov. 23 (Thanksgiving) in exchange for the release of 50 Jewish hostages, according to various media reports, has since gone into effect. After sustained negotiations throughout the week, according to reporting by the Associated Press on Nov. 22, the hostages were due to be released on Friday, Nov 24. Some aid agencies said a four-day cessation of violence was too short a timeframe to provide the humanitarian support needed in the region. Meanwhile, on Friday, AP reported that Hamas freed just 24 Jewish hostages in exchange for 39 Palestinian prisoners under the latest agreed deal.

Turnout appeared to be pretty low and slow on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 7, as expected for a non-presidential election. All eyes were on the District 13 City Council race which saw Republican and Conservative candidate Kristy Marmorato lead incumbent Democratic City Councilwoman Marjorie Velázquez on Election Night by 10 p.m. an hour after poll closure, based on Election Day and early votes and with 96.67 percent of voting scanners returned. Mail-in ballots and overseas ballots also still have to be counted.

UPDATE Norwood: Four-Alarm Overnight Fire Rips Through Several Small Businesses on Bainbridge Avenue

A four-alarm fire ripped through the busy business strip of Bainbridge Avenue overnight on Tuesday, Oct. 10, with several businesses impacted by the blaze, which saw fire trucks and news crews take up the section of the avenue stretching from Van Cortlandt Avenue as far as Mosholu Parkway North. Firefighters initially said there were no injuries, but later confirmed one person was transported to North Central Bronx Hospital.
