Norwood: Discarded Batteries Cause Garbage Truck Fire

A fire broke out in a garbage truck in the Norwood section of The Bronx on Monday morning, April 27. Resident Marcos Sierra who, as reported, previously ran for City Council in District 11, shared the attached photo of the fire which ignited inside an NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) truck. “Be careful what you throw out!!” Sierra wrote.

Three building contractors were indicted on Wednesday, April 12, in the first Bronx case to bring charges of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide for a construction fatality which took place, as reported by Norwood News at the time, at 94 East 208th Street in Norwood in 2019.   The victim, a father and 46-year-old Ecuadorian immigrant worker, Segundo Manuel Huerta Mayancela, was crushed by 1,000 pounds of debris in what was described as an egregiously dangerous building site, a joint investigation by NYC Department of Investigation (DOI) and the Bronx District Attorney’s office found. Partial Building Collapse in Norwood Traps One Worker

Fire and police crews are on the scene of a partial building collapse at 94 E. 208th St. by Steuben Avenue in Norwood that has claimed the life of one worker. The collapse happened just before noon, according to an FDNY spokesman, prompting a contingent of fire, police, and paramedics to rush to the scene. At least one worker is dead. NYPD officers apprehended a suspect wanted in the rare daytime rape of a woman just a block from North Central Bronx Hospital. Police arrested and charged German Otero, 36, of the Inwood section Manhattan, for raping the victim on Oct. 24 at an obscure spot on DeKalb Avenue and East 208th Street.
