Woman Robbed inside Van Cortlandt Village Bank

Police have released two photos of a man they say robbed a 20-year-old woman inside a bank in Van Cortlandt Village. Police said officers from the 50th Precinct were called to the Ridgewood Savings Bank, located at 3899 Sedgwick Avenue at Gouverneur Avenue at 2.47 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5, 2024.

Elected Officials Encourage New Yorkers to Make Use of Family Enrichment Centers (FEC)

Elected officials are encouraging New Yorkers to make full use of the City’s local Family Enrichment Centers (FEC). Launched in 2017, these are welcoming walk-in, family-centered spaces, open to all, co-designed with community members, and run by the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS). The availability of such centers seems all the more relevant given the latest wave of violence unleashed against young people in The Bronx. Some of the programs include medical support, parent discussion groups, men’s discussion groups, and clothes and food distribution.  

Dominicans Celebrate 36th Annual Bronx Dominican Day Parade; Several Shootings Later Take Place

The Bronx Dominican community showed up in huge numbers to celebrate the 36th Annual Bronx Dominican Day Parade on Sunday, July 27. Earlier that morning, New York City Mayor Eric Adams held a press conference at the 42nd Precinct in the Melrose section of the South Bronx, to discuss major wins in the fight against gun violence before later marching in the parade. Later that evening, violence erupted as several people were shot or otherwise injured close to the parade route.

Bronx Man Charged with Narcotics Offenses Resulting in Death Used Stash House Occupied by Child

Federal prosecutors announced Friday, Aug. 1, that a 34-year-old Bronx man, Estherlyn Frias, a/k/a “Platinum,” a/k/a “Silver,” was charged with drug dealing resulting in death in connection with the “overdose” of a victim in Greenwich, Connecticut last month. Prosecutors allege the man ran the drug operation out of his partner’s home where a young child slept in close proximity to potent narcotics.

More Bronx connections have come to light following Monday’s tragic mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan in addition to Det. First Grade Didarul Islam [posthumously promoted from police officer], 36, a Bangladeshi American, husband, father of two, with another baby on the way, assigned to the Bronx’s 47th Precinct, whose funeral took place on July 31, as reported.

Bronxite Wants More Mental Health Support after Armed Man Arrested following Fatal Manhattan Mass Shooting

A young police officer assigned to The Bronx’s 47th Precinct in the North Bronx, was fatally shot, along with five other people, including the gunman, during an active shooter incident that unfolded in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening, July 28, at around 6.30 p.m. police said. Four people died during the incident, including the gunman, who reportedly shot himself, and one remains in critical but stable condition in hospital, they said.

Following the dignified transfer on Monday night, July 28, of slain Det. First Grade Didarul Islam [posthumously promoted from police officer] from Midtown Manhattan, where he was killed by an active shooter earlier that day, several hundred NYPD police officers, detectives, and top-ranking police officials, including Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, joined Bronx residents on Tuesday, July 29, in a guard of honor as his body was transferred into his local mosque at 1203 Virginia Avenue in Parkchester.
