New York City Beaches Reopen for Summer 2023

NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue announced earlier this week that the City’s eight public beaches are open for swimming effective Saturday, May 27, and will remain open through Sunday, Sept. 10. Lifeguards will be on duty daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and swimming is unsafe and strictly prohibited at all other times. “Our city’s waterfront is a vital part of summer for New Yorkers,” said Donoghue. “It’s a place to cool off, kick back, and relax, and we’re committed to making sure that all of our beaches are clean, safe, attractive destinations. The NYPD is asking for the public’s help identifying the person and vehicle seen in the attached photos in the context of a robbery pattern which has been traced across The Bronx and Manhattan during April and May 2023. The first incident occurred in the Kingsbridge Heights section of The Bronx in the 50th Precinct, police said. An NYPD spokesperson said that on Friday, April 14, at around 3 a.m., the victim, a 27-year-old man, was in front of 3472 Bailey Avenue when he was approached by three people unknown to him. A 2-alarm fire in the Bedford Park section of The Bronx on Thursday resulted in no injuries, FDNY officials said. The blaze broke out on the 1st floor of a residential building at 5 Minerva Place by Jerome Avenue and Creston Avenue, FDNY officials said, adding that they were alerted to the incident at 1.25 p.m. on Thursday, May 25. An FDNY spokesperson said 25 units, comprising 106 firefighters responded to the scene at the 6-story building and the blaze was placed under control at 2.54 p.m. The spokesperson added that the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The New York City Police Department is asking the public’s assistance identifying the person seen in this video who the department says is sought in connection with an assault that occurred in Fordham Heights on Sunday, May 21, 2023. Police said they have arrested a man for an assault on a 62-year-old man in Fordham Heights earlier this month. The NYPD had been asking for the public’s help identifying the person seen in the attached video and photos who department officials said was sought in connection with the attack. The NYPD is seeking the public’s help locating Leone Ultan, 70, who was reported missing from Fordham Manor on Wednesday, May 24. Police said that Ultan of 2550 Webb Avenue was last seen leaving her home on Thursday, May 4, at around 7.25 p.m. She was described by police as female, has a light complexion and white hair, is around 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighs around 105 pounds. Farrah Kule Rubin is the new Bronx Community Board 8 district manager. The news was shared with community members at a Bronx Community Board 8 meeting earlier this month. Rubin starts her new role effective June 5, according to the board, and replaces Ciara Gannon, who was promoted to director of community boards at the Office of the Bronx Borough President by Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson in recent weeks. A now annual COVID memorial ceremony was once again held by local northwest Bronx residents, including Friends of Jerome Park, at Fort Washington Walk at the corner of Reservoir Avenue and University Avenue in Jerome Park on Saturday, May 13, to commemorate those lost to COVID-19 over the course of the recent pandemic. On Oct. 23, 2021, a tree-planting ceremony took place at the same location to memorialize all victims of the pandemic. Three of the trees were seen this year growing very well. Marianne Kraft, one of organizers of the event, previously told Norwood News that trees were the perfect symbol
