UPDATE New York Private Hospitals Poised for Potential Strike Action by NYS Nurses Association

Nurses who had been negotiating with their respective employers through the weekend ending Sunday, Jan. 4 over their working conditions and latest contracts have seen little progress at the table, according to the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA). A spokesperson for the union said on Monday, Jan. 5, that in just seven days, as many as 21,000 nurses at 15 private hospitals in New York City and Long Island could go on strike in what they say would be the biggest nurse strike in New York history.

New York Lottery: TAKE 5 Top-Prize Ticket Sold in The Bronx

New York Lottery officials announced Jan. 4 that there was one top-prize winning ticket sold for the Jan. 3 TAKE 5 EVENING drawing in The Bronx. They said the ticket was sold at Little Lizzie’s located at 3610 E Tremont Avenue in the Throggs Neck section of the borough, and is worth $33,521.

Newly inaugurated New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani paid a visit to The Bronx on Sunday, Jan. 4, to announce the holding of a series of “Rental Ripoff” hearings in defense of tenants, and the appointment of longtime housing leader Dina Levy as the new commissioner of the Department of Housing Preservation & Development (HPD). The announcement was made during a press conference held at the birthplace of Hip Hop at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Morris Heights section of The Bronx.

As his very first mayoral function, following his midnight official swearing in ceremony held in the old, abandoned City Hall subway station, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the appointment of Mike Flynn, described as a transportation leader, as commissioner of NYC Department of Transportation (DOT). The Mamdani administration said the appointment underscores its commitment “to delivering an affordability agenda through safer streets, faster buses, and transportation systems that work for working New Yorkers.”
