Norwood: DOB Updates Residents Seeking Access to Fatal Fire Building as St. Brendan’s Hosts Clothing Drive

Following the devastating 5-alarm, fatal fire on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 374 East 209th Street in the Norwood section of The Bronx which killed three people, injured 14 and displaced the entire building, NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) has provided an update on the structural stability of the building as surviving residents wait to access whatever remains of their belongings.

Local elected officials, Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, State Sen. Gustavo Rivera (S.D. 33), Assemblywoman Yudelka Tapia (A.D. 86) and Assemblyman George Alvarez (A.D. 78) joined officials from City University of New York (CUNY), including Lehman College, and MADDD Equities on Wednesday, Aug. 5, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of The Lehman Grand, the first student dormitory for Bedford Park’s Lehman College students.

Former Sanitation Superintendent Charged with Possession of Child Pornography

Federal officials announced Wednesday, Aug. 5, that a 61-year-old Bronx man and former superintendent with NYC Department of Sanitation (‘DSNY’), Victor Alvelo, has been charged with possessing thousands (estimated) of images and videos depicting child pornography, including images that depict pre-pubescent children engaging in sexually explicit conduct.

Bronx Students Get Hands-On Technology Training Through Partnership with City, LinkNYC & Partners

LinkNYC teamed up with Digital Girl, Inc. and Fix It With Piggy to bring over a dozen high school students from The Bronx and Brooklyn together at the Brooklyn’s Gigabit Center in Crown Heights, which provides for hands-on training in fiber optic cable splicing, smartphone repair, and other in-demand technical skills. The Center is managed in partnership with NYC Office of Technology & Innovation.

NYC and EmblemHealth Settle Senior Care Co-Pay Class Action for $53 Million

In a major development, the City of New York and EmblemHealth agreed to pay $53 million to settle a class action lawsuit on behalf of more than 250,000 elderly and disabled retired City workers enrolled in EmblemHealth’s GHI Senior Care Plan, lawyers for the workers said on Monday, Aug. 3. They said the suit was brought by the NYC Organization of Public Service Retirees and a handful of retirees, and the signed settlement papers were sent to New York County Supreme Court Justice Lyle E. Frank for the Court’s approval. 

Einstein College Opens IGNITE Community Teaching Lab to Expand Access to Bronx Science Education

The Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in Morris Park, has opened the IGNITE (Inspiring Growth in Next Generation Investigation, Training and Education) community teaching lab, the first of its kind in The Bronx. College officials said the state-of-the-art research lab provides high school and college students in Einstein’s pathway programs and across The Bronx with opportunities to experience science through hands-on learning and discovery.
