A 67-year-old woman has died following a scooter accident in Belmont, police said.

On Friday, Sept. 23, at around 11.37 a.m., police from the 48th Precinct responded to a 911 call regarding a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of East 188th Street and Park Avenue.

THE INTERSECTION OF Park Avenue and E 188th Street in Belmont was the location of a two-vehicle, e-bike accident on Friday, Sept. 23, 2022, which resulted in the death on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022, of a 67-year-old female e-bike driver.

“Upon arrival, officers observed a 67-year-old female, e-bike operator, lying on the roadway with trauma to the body,” an NYPD spokesperson said. “EMS responded to the location and transported the aided female to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022.”

Police said that further investigation by the NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad (CIS) determined that a 2010 Ford Escape, driven by a 63-year-old man, had been traveling eastbound on East 188th Street, approaching the intersection at Park Avenue at the time of the collision. They added that at the same time, the e-bike driven by the female victim had been traveling westbound on East 188th Street on the south sidewalk and that the driver had been attempting to cross Park Avenue.

They said the e-bike driver proceeded towards the crosswalk while the Ford Escape was making a right turn onto Park Avenue. As a result of the collision, the e-scooter driver was ejected and thrown onto the pavement and was subsequently struck by the front and rear driver side tires of the Ford Escape. The driver of the Ford remained at the scene and was not injured. “There are no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing,” police said.

The identity of the deceased is pending proper family notification.

Criminal investigations into road collisions are handled by the NYPD, while NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) reviews the street design at the locations of such crashes.
