Wakefield: 69-Year-Old Man Arrested in Fatal April Hit ‘n Run that Killed 29-Year-Old Mt. Hope Man

A 69-year-old man has been arrested following a fatal hit ‘n run in the Wakefield section of The Bronx in April in which a 29-year-old man died.

 

Police said that on Thursday, April 9, at around 9.12 p.m., police responded to a vehicle collision at the vicinity of Boston Road and East 211th Street. “Further investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that a Kawasaki motorcycle, operated by a 29-year-old male, was traveling southbound on Boston Road when a Toyota Sienna, operated by a 69-year-old male, was traveling northbound on Boston Road and made a left turn onto East 211 Street,” a police spokesperson said.

 

“The Toyota Sienna collided with the motorcycle, continued westbound on East 211 Street, and did not remain on scene,” the spokesperson added. “EMS responded and transported the 29-year-old male to NYC Health and Hospitals/Jacobi in critical condition, where he was later pronounced deceased.”

Police said the deceased has been identified as Ronald Vasquez Herrera, 29, of the Mount Hope section of The Bronx. “Pursuant to an ongoing investigation, they said Hubert Shantilou, 69, from the Wakefield section of The Bronx, was arrested on Friday, June 12, at 11.20 a.m. in the confines of the 47th Precinct which covers Wakefield.

 

They said Shantilou was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, having no license, and making an improper left turn. He is presumded innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.

 

With collision investigations, the NYPD handles all criminal aspects of the investigation, while NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) reviews the street design at the locations of such crashes. The latest general traffic-related crime statistics are attached for the 47th Precinct, where the crash occurred.
