Con Edison said an electrical issue caused a power outage in the Norwood section of The Bronx on Thursday, July 31, leaving some residents without power for a duration of the day.
A video recorded by Norwood resident Marcos Sierra showed smoke billowing out of two separate manholes on Mosholu Parkway between West Gun Hill Road and Gates Place on Thursday, as local residents simultaneously experienced a power outage.

Tagging Con Edison and Norwood News, in the video, Sierra said, “Smells like burning wires or rubber. Several buildings w/out power. Send help!!” He added, “Beneath this car, there’s a lot of smoke coming out. They called the fire department and they just came and put some yellow tape down and really didn’t do anything. Now the smoke is spreading to a second manhole.”
He added, “Really need your help because there’s at least four buildings that I know from Mosholu Parkway on Gun Hill Road and Gates Place that are without power at all. We’re calling 311 and Con Ed but I’m also reaching out to you because we need your help.”

Norwood News contacted both the FDNY and Con Edison on Friday, July 31, for more information about the incident. The FDNY referred us to Con Edison. A Con Ed representative, Anne Marie Corbalisa, replied, saying, “Our crews responded to a report of a smoking manhole yesterday. They worked to make repairs to a faulty cable and safely restored customers to service.” Norwood News asked how many residents were affected by the outage and for how long. We’ll share details upon receipt.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, Aug. 1, in addition to heavy smoke, flames were seen emerging from a manhole on Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn, even as traffic continued to pass by the location, as seen in this video posted to X by Jay, who tagged NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Con Ed, and later confirmed having also contacted the FDNY.

Con Edison responded to the post asking for the location. Norwood News currently has no further information on the incident as we do not have the exact location.
