A downed tree that fell at 3081 Decatur Avenue on Saturday evening, June 6, between East 204th Street and East Mosholu Parkway North in Norwood, was blocking the street from vehicular traffic as of around 10 p.m. on Saturday.

 

The tree trunk did not appear to break but appeared to uproot and fall over.

Local resident Katie and neighbor AJ Ramos said the tree seemingly fell before the heavy rain and thunder started on Saturday evening.

 

Meanwhile, Katie, who called 911 to report the incident, as did her neighbors, and who was informed that FDNY were on the way, said, “Just a lady from that black car had come out with a baby like minutes or seconds you could say before the tree fell.”

Asked if she, herself, had seen the tree fall, Katie said she had not but that her neighbor did and called her to tell her. Asked if the lady who exited the car with the baby and turned back after exiting the car and reacted to the falling tree, Katie said, “No, just my neighbors across the street told me that.”

 

Katie added, “There was an inspection about a month ago, and about two weeks ago, they had trimmed them all. I think it’s the Parks’ department. I don’t know who… They said they were inspecting them to trim them down.” She added, “And they checked the roots and everything of the tree and it seemed healthy, because it does seem healthy.” She said the neighbors said, “It was just the wind and then        whoosh (claps) and it went down.”

Katie said she had been in the back of her house earlier and hadn’t heard the tree fall. She also said she has parking in the back of her home and was expecting her son and nephew to visit by car the same evening from Manhattan, but added that they now wouldn’t be able to access the driveway due to the tree blocking access.

 

She said emergency services had asked her about whether the tree was blocking access when she called, and she had explained the situation to them. “There’s no [free] parking for anybody [on the street],” she said, adding that to pay for parking at the local parking lot was very expensive.

Meanwhile, Ramos said he didn’t see the tree fall either and several other residents we spoke to also said they did not hear anything. He also mentioned about forestry having been in the area recently to inspect the trees.

 

Referring to the removal of trash and pointing down Decatur Avenue towards East Mosholu Parkway North, Ramos said, “I take care of the tree pits down here. The City gave us some native tree pollinator garden plants so we do that. I had never noticed any problems with this tree. I don’t know if it was a tree-rot issue before the storm, but I think the storm just.. the rain started after the tree fell.”

 

Asked if the tree had been wavering prior to that, Ramos said no. “I’m a trained tree captain with New York Parks, did not see any suspicious signs on the street.”

Ramos said it was just weird that after the visit by Forestry, the tree suddenly fell. Katie said one of the standing trees next to the fallen tree was older. “Hopefully, we’ll get a new one,” Ramos said.

 

Residents said there were no injuries to their knowledge but some cars do appear to have incurred some damage, including a broken side mirror. Another car was seen with green scrapes on the corner where the tree seemingly narrowly missed falling on top it. “Incredible,” one bystander was heard saying about the miss.

Several shocked residents were also seen milling around the area on Saturday evening, taking in and filming the scene.

 

Residents later said emergency services had arrived. The sidewalk beside the tree was passable earlier on Saturday evening but the street section where the fallen tree was was later seen cordoned off with yellow tape in photos taken by residents.

Norwood News reached out to the Parks department for comment. A representative responded saying that as of around 10 p.m. on Saturday night, the department had received 259 reports of trees down citywide due to recent weather conditions. The spokesperson said that often, reports are duplicates and therefore the number should not be taken as an actual number of total trees down.

The representative said the Parks team were continuing to monitor for storm impacts and would address tree-related reports as soon as it was safe to do so.  The representative asked that tree conditions be reported to 311, or in cases of true emergency, to 911.

In August 2022, a 59-year-old woman died in Spuyten Duyvil after a tree fell into a swimming pool. In January 2024, as reported, a large tree branch fell on Van Cortlandt Avenue between Bainbridge and Rochambeau Avenues in Norwood, and in June 2024, in St. James Park, a large fallen tree branch sent kids and a mom with a stroller running for cover inside St. James Park.

Meanwhile, in July 2021, a large, heavy tree branch also fell in the Williamsbridge Oval in Norwood after some windy and stormy weather, and as some people were walking underneath it.
