A woman has died and a 36-year-old man remains in critical condition following a two-vehicle road collision on University Avenue in Fordham Manor.

The NYPD said on Sunday, May 22, at around 10.47 p.m., police officers responded to a 911 call about a motor vehicle collision at 2518 University Avenue.

“Upon arrival, officers observed a 2016 Suzuki motorcycle with extensive damage, a 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300, with driver-side front-end damage, and two aided individuals: a 36-year-old male and an unidentified adult female, both with severe head and body trauma,” the official said.

“EMS also responded to the location and transported both individuals to Saint Barnabas Hospital, where the male is listed in critical condition and the female was pronounced deceased,”  the official added.

A preliminary investigation determined that the Mercedes-Benz sedan was traveling northbound on University Avenue when the driver drove over the solid yellow line from northbound to southbound. The police official said, “The Mercedes-Benz then struck the motorcycle, that was traveling south on University Avenue. The impact of the collision caused both occupants of the motorcycle to be ejected.”

Police said the 29-year-old driver of the Mercedes-Benz remained at the scene and was not injured. There are no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad (CIS).

For CIS investigations, the NYPD handles the criminal investigations, while NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) reviews the street design at the location of the such incidents.

Various users of the Citizens App reacted to the incident. User, Jayayee, said, “That’s horrible. She probably was the passenger.” The same user talked generally about scooters “driving around recklessly, not respecting traffic lights, or following road law.” Jayayee added, “No helmets, no insurance, all of them should be taken off the damn streets and get licensed!!”

Another, Ghost996, said, “It’s not even summer yet,” seemingly in reference to the annual spate of car accidents which appear to get worse over the summer months.

Yet another Citizens App user, FizZzics, suggested that the two people in question on the motorcycle were not wearing helmets. Norwood News contacted the NYPD to ask if this was the case in relation to this particular incident. We did not receive an immediate reply.

The same user later said, “Smh [shaking my head] Y’all stay safe outside. It’s crazy out here. Take care and watch where ya going and crossing.” The same user suggested that most people on bikes did not care about others and did as they pleased. FizZzics later added, “NYC don’t care at all,” and “NYC is New York Sh*tty.” The same user went on to say “These ILLEGAL, unregistered, unlicensed, uninsured scooters need to GTFO.”

User, Crystal718, later asked, “What’s our good mayor Adams gonna do about this problem[?] LOL.” The user later adding, “Ever since that man became mayor, this city really went to sh*t.”

User, IGemilltmu, had a more tempered view of the situation, saying, “Not everyone on bikes is doing the wrong thing. Some of them are working to get food for [their] family,” later agreeing with previous comments, and saying, “Summer is coming.”

User, Yollie02, seemed to be of the same view, saying, “This incident doesn’t mean someone was being reckless. It could be just an accident.”

Another user, Gabi008, responded to Yollie02, saying they disagreed as they said they had seen the incident and that the motorcycle had, in their view, been driving too fast.

Yet another user, KingsB718, later said, “I just hope one of those deliver bikes hit me. Ima knock there head off.” The user later added that he had seemingly had 25 encounters with such bikes this year, alone.

User, Belquis said, “There two person on the motorcycle and they don’t know who fault it is but is sad two people died.”

As above, and as per the NYPD, just one person was reported as having died as a result of the incident.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the CrimeStoppers website atWWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM, on Twitter @NYPDTips.
