The NYPD has launched an investigation following the discovery of a deceased person in the Crotona section of The Bronx.

Police said that on Saturday, Jan. 20, at around 1.58 p.m., officers from the 48th Precinct responded to a call for a wellness check inside 800 East 179th Street.

“Upon arrival, officers observed an unidentified aided person in a state of decomposition inside an apartment,” a police spokesperson said. “EMS responded and pronounced the aided deceased on scene. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. The investigation remains ongoing at this time.”

According to information filed with NYC Department of Housing, Preservation & Development (HPD), there was a complaint filed at the address in question regarding no heat in one apartment. As of Jan. 16, the complaint was closed with the following update, “The Department of Housing Preservation and Development contacted an occupant of the apartment and verified that the following conditions were corrected. The complaint has been closed. If the condition still exists, please file a new complaint.”

We do not know if the impacted apartment is the same apartment where the person died, nor the cause of death. We are following up and will share any updates we receive.
