Trash, Curbside Composting and Recycling Collection Changes over Thanksgiving Weekend

On Saturday Sept. 12, 2020 at Poe Park, Parks Department employees clear the trash.

The New York City Department of Sanitation announced that in observance of Thanksgiving Day, there will be no trash, curbside composting or recycling collection on Thursday, Nov. 25.

  • Residents who normally receive Thursday trash or curbside composting collection may place their material at the curb between 4 p.m. and midnight Thursday evening. However there will be collection delays, as is common after holidays. They ask residents to be patient while they await collection.
  • Residents who normally receive Thursday recycling collection should place their material out at curbside between 4 p.m. and midnight on Wednesday, Dec. 1, for pick-up on Thursday, Dec. 2.

Additionally, all Sanitation Department administrative offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 25, in observance of the holiday.

The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) collects, recycles and disposes of waste, cleaning streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice. The department operates 59 district garages and manages a fleet of more than 2,000 rear-loading collection trucks, 450 mechanical brooms and 705 salt spreaders.

DSNY officials say the department clears litter, snow and ice from approximately 6,500 miles of City streets and removes abandoned vehicles from the streets, and debris from vacant lots.
