Woodlawn Conservancy will be hosting The Countee Cullen, The Salons, and the Black Tower Trolley Tour on Saturday, June 12, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The tour celebrates Woodlawn’s African American and Afro-Caribbean Heritage, where participants can visit the sites of Countee Cullen and Hubert Harrison and read their writings along the way. The tour supports Woodlawn’s reading and discussion group sponsored by Humanities New York. Tour participants are kindly asked to wear a mask while on the trolley. Bronx Anti-Prom presents Proud to Read: LGBTQAI+ Book Tasting by Pelham Parkway-Van Nest Library on Monday, June 21. In celebration of PRIDE month, librarians from Bronx Library Center, Hunts Point and Pelham Parkway-Van Nest will highlight favorite LGBTQ reads that showcase the diversity and voices of queer representation.

 

Participants must register with an email address to receive the link to join. The link will be sent by email approximately one day before the program. You will need a device with audio and video and an internet connection to participate. This program is part of the 2021 Bronx Anti-Prom Virtual Programs. The theme this year is ‘New Beginnings’, a hopeful outlook into the future ahead after a difficult year. Van Cortlandt Park Alliance (VCPA) is hosting a spring benefit Lawn Party on Thursday, June 24, from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Van Cortlandt House Museum, located at 6036 Broadway, Van Cortlandt Park, The Bronx, NY 10471. This year, VCPA is honoring Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, Commissioner, NYC Department of Parks & Recreation. Williamsbridge Oval Recreation Center, located at 3225 Reservoir Oval East in the Bronx, is hosting various Adult Programs from April 5 to June 25, 2021. Circuit Training with Carl is held on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Join this low impact strength workout, a beginner’s way to start building muscle.

Kripalu Yoga with Michele is held on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Through breathing, meditation and movements, wake up with this great morning routine.

Riding to the Beat with Ingrid is held on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Come out for a morning spin bike, ride to get your heartbeat up. This is a great cardio workout.

Pickleball with Oscar is held on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Learn the basics in this paddle game, similar to tennis and compete against others on the tennis courts.

 

Families and children of all ages are invited to join Williamsbridge Oval Recreation Center for Family Fitness Festival on Thursday June 17 from 4.30 to 6.30 p.m. in Williamsbridge Oval Park. The Bronx Documentary Center welcomes photographer, James Nachtwey, and TIME Magazine Editor, Paul Moakley, as they discuss their work ‘The Opioid Diaries’, on Saturday, June 12, at 6 p.m. This is an in-person socially distanced event held at The Bronx Documentary Center Annex, located at 364 East 151st Street, The Bronx, NY 10455. In 2017, Nachtwey and Moakley set out to document the U.S. opioid crisis, an addiction epidemic that kills nearly 64,000 people in America every year. The pair traveled the country gathering stories from users, families, first responders and others at the heart of America’s opioid epidemic. MUSIC

The National Museum of African American Music is hosting an inaugural State of Black Music virtual summit on Friday, June 18. This one-day event will feature dynamic discourse and panels exploring the intersection of Black music and culture, with industry leaders, top artists, and media personalities gracing the stage as panelists. This event will also feature the premiere of the official State of Black Music podcast as well as mark the release of the museum’s 4th State of Black Music report. The Bronx Arts Ensemble (BAE) proudly announces its 2021 Virtual Benefit Concert, ¡Jazz Puertorriqueño! Latin jazz legend and multi-Grammy nominee, Bobby Sanabria, joins the members of the Bronx Arts Ensemble on Thursday, June 10 at 7p.m. for a musical collaboration to support BAE’s community concerts and arts-in-education programs. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
