Officers from the 52nd Precinct have offered a reward for information on a shooting that occurred in Norwood on July 26.

As reported on our social media channels, Norwood News received unconfirmed reports from local businesses of a shooting on Tuesday afternoon, July 26, on East Gull Hill Road in the vicinity of Hull Avenue. When contacted on two different occasions later that day by Norwood News, a police press office spokesperson said they had no record of the alleged incident.

However, the next day, July 27, the 52nd Precinct tweeted that a reward of up to $3,500 was being offered for information regarding a confirmed shooting which the command said took place on July 26 at 3.45 p.m. at 330 East Gun Hill Road.

According to officers from the 52nd Precinct, police are investigating an attempted felony assault that took place in front of 330 East Gun Hill Road on the date and time in question, which involved a suspect allegedly firing a gun multiple times in the direction of some people from the back driver side window of a silver car, pictured below.

One local East Gun Hill Road store employee we spoke to within a half an hour of when the incident occurred, and whose name we are not disclosing for his protection, said he did not see the incident unfold but heard the gunshots.

“I was here and all I heard was about five-six shots go off,” he said, adding that he was with his cousin at the time and they both went into the back of the store. “I went into the back. We knew it was gunshots, but you know, sometimes with certain cars they sound like….but no….it was..[shots].”

The employee later added that in the commotion, he saw a bunch of people outside and said, “I think maybe some woman was bleeding.” However, when asked if he saw her, he confirmed he did not, and neither did he see any ambulance arrive. Norwood News received no confirmation of any injuries arising from the incident.

Explaining how the event unfolded after hearing the shots, the employee said, “We called the police straight away,” he said. “That’s how they got here. We were the ones that called them. I went to the back and I called the cops real quick and that was it, you know,” he said.

Reflecting on the incident and seemingly still somewhat in shock, the employee said, “At the end of the day, you got to be able to deal with what, you know, your neighborhood deals with on the regular which is the shots, you know?”

He added, “Just a couple of months ago, there was about 11 shots that went off just around here… Down on Webster, somebody got killed, in the head, shot in the head, in the chest down on Webster.” As reported, a 34-year-old man was fatally shot on Webster Avenue, off East Gun Hill Road on Friday, April 22, at approximately 1.28 a.m. Police charged a 36-year-old man in the ongoing murder investigation following the incident.

The man added, “It’s something you got to get used to at the end of the day. I’ve been working here for 7 years so, you know, I know the neighborhood and we just got to be able to just have some type of, like, safety or something.”

The employee continued, “At the end of the day, these are all our people. You don’t want nobody….. the lady that got hit… I heard some lady got hit, apparently… She wasn’t even involved with whatever… so you know, if you got that going on, you got a bunch of innocent people, you might have maybe even a little kid might get hit. Nobody wants that in the neighborhood at all. Nobody does..”

Asked if he was concerned for his own safety in the neighborhood, the employee said, “It’s not that I feel unsafe. I mean I come from a similar background. It’s more about the community. I’m not really worried about myself as I’m worried about everyone else.. it’s more the kids and a woman.. a woman got hit.. kids and a woman, you got to keep them safe.”

He continued, “Even as a man, you know, you got to keep the men safe.. and like, there’s always a bunch of kids on the corner. What if a kid got hit? You don’t want a kid getting hit. It would be heartbreaking to everybody. These are kids that you watch grow up and you know who their parents are. That’s the thing; it’s true. Ah, it’s like.. you know.. I mean I don’t know what we should do about it. The best thing is to come together and try to inform the police and try to get some extra safety over here, you know? We got to be able to just be safe… just chill out, you know?
