After 6-year-old Oseas Parks, older brother to 1-year-old Liam Parks, and twin brother to his sister, Isis Parks, died following the fatal fire in Fordham Manor on Monday, May 11, LiveOnNY, the organization which coordinates organ donation across New York State, announced on Monday, May 18, that Oseas’s organ donations have saved the lives of three others.

 

The 6-year-old’s tragic loss of life follows that of his younger brother Liam, 1, who died on Monday, and of his twin sister Isis who died Friday, May 15. Isis and Oseas had reportedly been intubated and were in critical condition in the days that followed the fire which broke out at 2609 Bainbridge Avenue on May 11.

President & CEO of LiveOnNY Leonard Achan said May 18, “Oseas Parks, a 6-year-old Bronx boy who tragically lost his life with his two siblings in an apartment fire last week, became an organ donor hero today, giving life to others.” He added in part,  “LiveOnNY [..] can confirm that Oseas saved the lives of three people with four of his organs donated to those on the national transplant waitlist.”

 

He added, “LiveOnNY’s teams logistically managed Oseas’ gifts of life for safe transport to the three recipients who were between the ages of 8 and 37-years-old. Two of the recipients were from New York and one was from out of state. Oseas, which means ‘salvation’ in Spanish, was able to donate both kidneys, a liver and pancreas.”

The statement continued, “LiveOnNY is humbled and honored to be the stewards of these precious gifts of life so that Oseas and others may live on. We extend our deepest condolences to his parents, extended family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers remain with them during this very difficult time. This is an unimaginable loss for any parent. That they thought of others in saying yes to organ donation during such a time of grief is a powerful testament to their generosity and will ensure that Oseas will live on through his gifts.”

 

Speaking in Spanish to Norwood News, Jaime Cuevas Ventura, a resident of the building, said Liam’s mother had called neighbors on Friday morning and shared the tragic news about her daughter, Isis, while his father shared news of Oseas on Sunday. The blaze has displaced all of the building’s residents.

 

Cuevas Ventura said the family had tragically lost another child a long time ago prior to the fire, and that the couple have three surviving older children.

As reported, Cuevas Ventura said on the day of the fire, he had climbed onto the second floor from the rear exterior of the burning building and had woken up and rescued a sleeping mother and young girl, neighbors of the Parks family, before the FDNY arrived.

 

He said he and the Parks children’s mother had first tried to enter the Parks family’s apartment through the internal stairway but were overwhelmed by thick smoke at the apartment door.

 

He said the children’s mother had gone downstairs briefly to collect another child returning from school.

He said he later broke a rear window to try to get into the Parks family’s apartment to get to Liam, Isis and Oseas but was unable due to the amount of dense smoke. He said he only managed to access the neighbor’s apartment.

At that point, he said the firefighters had arrived and got the three Parks children out. They were later seen in photos captured by residents trying to resuscitate Liam at the scene. However, it was later confirmed that Liam died on Monday.

 

On Friday night, May, 15, the candlelit memorial to Liam, seen earlier the same week following news of his passing, had been enhanced to also pay tribute to Isis, with one message of love reading in part, “Rest in Peace Babies,” while another read, “Rest in Peace Liam and Isis Parks” followed by their dates of birth and a cross.

Residents and friends had been adding to the memorial since Monday with soft toys and more messages of love and remembrance seen written on white boards.

 

A group of three young children aged around 6 were seen standing in front of the memorial on Friday night taking it in with one explaining to the others “It’s for Liam Parks.”
