Art Thrives on Bronx School’s Walls

With help and support from the PS 246’s maintenance staff, faculty, and former and current students, Annie Coan, an art teacher at the school, has mothered an artistic atmosphere that breathes on the school’s walls.

Op-ed: Why NYPD Needs an Inspector General

In June of 2012, the City Council introduced a bill that would establish the office of Inspector General for the Police Department. The office would oversee the policies and practices of the NYPD and analyze the effect of those policies and practices on civil liberties, among other things. Mayor Bloomberg has expressed serious opposition to the bill, promising to veto the legislation and describing the creation of an Inspector General’s office as mere “politics” that tamper with public safety. The mayor could not be more wrong.

Be Healthy: Stepping Up for Health

A new effort in the Bronx wants to pay you to use staircases for exercise. Lawrence Murphy and Alvin Niere, the duo responsible for the fledgling Bronx Steps Up program, see the initiative tackling two goals: promoting exercise and healthy living to combat obesity and, at the same time, raising money to renovate a deteriorating borough treasure, the Bronx’s street steps.

Bronx Notes: Free Soccer Club in NW Bronx

Children ages 10 to 12 can join a soccer club to learn and/or refresh soccer skills, Mondays at 3 p.m., starting April 1. Free bottled water will be provided. Meet at the Devoe Park entrance on West Fordham Road and Sedgwick Avenue by the BX 12 select bus stop, next to the small playground. Schools Chancellor Coming to Walton for Town Hall Forum

The Community Education Council District 10 is hosting a Town Hall-style forum with Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott on Wednesday, March 19, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Walton H.S. Educational Campus Auditorium, 2780 Reservoir Ave. Walcott will be discussing student achievement, school finances and the city’s educational goals and priorities. He will also be taking questions from the public.
