Races Shaping Up as Bronx City Council Hopefuls File Finance Reports

Candidates running in city elections this year were required to file campaign finance reports this week, giving us a pretty good idea of who the leading contenders for a handful of open Bronx seats will be. Of course, it’s still early and candidates will continue to emerge over the coming months, but those who filed this week are already off and running. Here’s a look at the most interesting City Council races in the Bronx and who’s leading the fundraising game in the 11th, 15th, 16th and 12th districts, which should all be competitive this year.

Bronx Notes: Blood Drive at North Central Bronx Hospital

The North Bronx Healthcare Network is holding a blood drive on Thursday, January 17, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in a mobile bus outside of North Central Bronx Hospital in Norwood, 3424 Kossuth Ave. Mark Gjonaj, the newly sworn-in 80th District assemblyman, will be stopping by to donate his blood at some point tomorrow.

Bronx Cousins Found Murdered Inside Car in Norwood

A man and a woman, cousins who lived at different ends of the Bronx, were found murdered early this morning inside of a car on Perry Avenue in Norwood. Just after midnight, after receiving a report of a person shot, police say they discovered both Jason Rivera, 30, and Jennifer Rivera, 20, with gunshot wounds to the head. They were both inside of a vehicle in front of 3328 Perry Ave., which is about a block south of East Gun Hill Road.

Healthy, Realistic and Attainable New Year’s Resolutions

It’s that time of year when people everywhere make unrealistic New Year’s resolutions that are often too difficult to maintain. This year, instead of aiming for extreme weight loss or finding the partner of your dreams, psychologist Simon Rego, Psy.D., of Montefiore Medical Center, recommends focusing on value-based resolutions. Students and Parents Prepare for Yellow Bus Service Strike

Parents and students should be sure to prepare for a hectic morning as the school bus drivers’ union schedules their strike for tomorrow. The Department of Education has released alternatives to getting students to school in the wake of the strike and Norwood News is working hard to make it as smooth as any another Wednesday morning.
