Sen. Hassell-Thompson’s New Norwood Office Space

Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson is setting up new bi-weekly office hours inside Mosholu Montefiore Community Center, 3450 Dekalb Avenue (at Gun Hill Road) in the Bronx. She joins Councilman Oliver Koppell and Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz who also have office hours at MMCC. On Wednesday, Feb. 6, and every other Wednesday after that, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Hassell-Thompson will have a staff member on site ready to assist anyone in need.

Bronx Notes: Mentoring Program for Students

The Young Scholars Immersion Program, a program coordinated by Kingsbridge Heights Community Center and Manhattan College, provides year-round mentoring and enrichment opportunities for disadvantaged students in the Bronx. The program is currently seeking more high school applicants. Students get the chance to visit college campuses, participate in writing and study workshops and get constant support from tutors at the College’s Center for Academic Success. NW Bronx Storm Aftermath Update (Halloween Edition)

Tenants, Pols Say Tracey Towers Rent Hike is Too Much (Rally Set for Tomorrow)

A few weeks ago, tenants at Tracey Towers, the troubled twin high-rise apartment buildings on Mosholu Parkway, received notices in the mail saying that on Sept. 1 their rent would spike 16 percent. The rent increases would continue over the following three years as well, leading to what amounts to a 65 percent rent hike by 2015.

Fire Escapes Re-Installed, Tenants Return to Bronx Building

Residents of a University Heights building have returned to their apartments after being displaced for a month and a half when city inspectors discovered that contractors doing repair work had inexplicably removed all of the building’s fire escapes without a permit. Now tenants are organizing in hopes of preventing similar problems down the road.
