NYC Emergency Management and the NYC Department of Social Services announced on Thursday, Sept. 9, that service centers in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens that were opened to support individuals and families affected by the flash flood emergency caused by Storm IDA on Sept. 1, will change locations beginning Friday, Sept. 10. Since the second week of July, a group of four young Bronxites have been meeting at St. Barnabas Hospital’s Healthplex in Little Italy on Thursday and Friday evenings for hour-long fitness and boxing classes. The classes are the latest initiative by St. Barnabas Hospital and the Bronx Rises Against Gun Violence (B.R.A.G.). cure violence program. As Lehman students head back to campus for the Fall ’21 semester, the community has one extra reason to celebrate. Two former students recently got engaged in a surprise proposal outside the campus building where they once attended class together. Giancarlo Paternoster, 27, proposed to girlfriend, Julia Djokic, 26, in front of Davis Hall on Aug. 19. Ridgewood Savings Bank (“Ridgewood”) announced Wednesday, Sept. 1, that its Sedgwick Avenue branch, located at 3899 Sedgwick Avenue in the Van Cortlandt Village section of the Bronx, will finally remain open. New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) announced Thursday, Aug. 12, the official launch of the city’s e-scooter pilot program in the East Bronx. Bird, Lime and Veo, the three companies participating in the pilot program, will bring up to 3,000 e-scooters to the East Bronx during Phase 1 which starts Tuesday, Aug. 17, with an increase to as many as 6,000 in the second phase next year. The CUNY Mexican Studies Institute (MSI), housed at Lehman College, is celebrating its 10th year with a significant new investment from local lawmakers. In July, the institute received a funding allocation of $1 million from New York City Council to support its work.
