A 22-year-old Bronx man Carlos Rivas was charged on Tuesday, Aug. 12, with possessing hundreds of images and videos of child pornography that show pre-pubescent children engaging in sexually explicit conduct, federal prosecutors said. U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Jay Clayton said Rivas was arrested yesterday and presented before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Lehrburger.
“As alleged, Carlos Rivas possessed hundreds of images and videos of child pornography while working at a Bronx school,” said U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton. “Child pornography has no place anywhere in our society, particularly anywhere connected to a school. Our devoted prosecutors and partners will unrelentingly fight this scourge.”
According to the allegations contained in the complaint, in the summer of 2024, Rivas worked at a school in The Bronx (“School-1”) and from at least in or about July 14, 2024, through in or about August 15, 2024, he possessed hundreds of images and videos constituting child pornography on his account with an electronic service provider’s file storage service. Some of the child pornography was uploaded to his account from an IP address associated with School-1.
Norwood News has asked federal prosecutors if it’s possible to confirm which Bronx school Rivas worked at and will share any feedback we receive.
Prosecutors said Rivas is charged with one count of possession of child pornography, including images and videos of prepubescent minors and minors who had not attained 12 years of age, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
The statutory maximum sentence is prescribed by Congress and provided for informational purposes only, as any sentencing of the defendant will be determined by a judge.
Clayton praised the efforts of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The case is being handled by the general crimes unit of the Office of U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Rita Maxwell is in charge of the prosecution.
The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
