The New York Police Department said a 72-year-old woman has died, and a 46-year-old male driver of a motorcycle and a 17-year-old pedestrian were both hospitalized following a motorcycle accident in the Allerton section of The Bronx.

Police said that on Wednesday, March 22, at around 4.30 p.m., officers from the 49th Precinct responded to a 911 call regarding a motor vehicle collision in which a pedestrian was struck at the intersection of Pelham Parkway and Williamsbridge Road, within the confines of the 49 Precinct.

A police spokesperson said, “A preliminary investigation on scene determined that a 46-year-old male was operating a 2006 Yamaha R-1 motorcycle, traveling westbound on Pelham Parkway, approaching the intersection of Williamsbridge Road, when he struck a 72-year-old female pedestrian who was crossing at the marked crosswalk area of westbound Pelham Parkway, within the intersection.”

The spokesperson continued, “As a result of the impact, both the motorcyclist and the female pedestrian fell to the roadway, as the motorcycle remained upright and continued westbound in the north curb area and proceeded to strike a 17-year-old female pedestrian who was standing on the sidewalk at the location.”

Police said EMS responded to the location and transported the motorcycle driver and both pedestrians to NYC Health and Hospitals/Jacobi. The driver and 17-year-old pedestrian were listed in stable condition. The 72-year-old female victim was pronounced deceased by hospital staff. There are no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad, police said.

The deceased was identified as Shirley Smith of Harlem.

The NYPD handles all criminal aspects of collision investigations, while NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) reviews the street design at the locations of such crashes.
