UPDATE Bedford Park: CB7 Honors Veterans at Community Breakfast

Bronx Community Board 7 (CB7), the New York Grey Cadets, Assemblyman John Zaccaro Jr. (A.D. 80), the NYC Civic Engagement Commission, veterans, residents and others gathered at Bedford Park’s Lehman College on Saturday Nov. 15, for a community breakfast in honor of Veterans Appreciation Month, which, as reported, is marked in November in New York City, since 2023. A participatory budget (PB) conversation was also held.

Commission officials spoke on how communities could propose ideas on how best to spend the city budget when it comes to local expense projects that truly benefit the community. Those in attendance filled out forms with their respective suggestions on where the money should go and why.

In attendance for the event was Assemblyman John Zaccaro Jr. (A.D. 80), Bronx CB7 District Manager Karla Cabrera Carrera, Bronx CB7 Veterans Committee Chair Chad Royer, Deahna Penn, army veteran and Bronx CB7 board member, the New York Grey Cadets, Ardhmir “Ardy” Malziu, male district leader for Assembly District 80, and more.

Other attendees included Bedford Park resident and veteran Anthony Rivieccio, Norwood residents, Sirio Guerino of Guerinos against Graffitti* and Heather Guerino of Crusaders for Children’s Rights, along with Luis Soltero, director of Lehman College’s Office of Veterans and Military Affairs.

Those in attendance delivered prepared remarks honoring both veterans and those in active duty, and there was also an awards presentation.

One of the more poignant and solemn features of the event was a sole dining table set up in remembrance and in tribute to prisoners of war (POWs), along side the U.S. flag.

Royer later said of the occasion, “It feels great to celebrate amongst our folks who served in the military.” He added, “I am grateful for taking part in a wonderful event at Lehman College, but I am also hopeful that we all can address the tough issues affecting our veterans in our communities all year round.”

For her part, Penn said in part, “Honoring all who gave, commemorating those who could not be here, and ushering in a new generation of service and pride in the Bronx.”

She added, “Here at Bronx Community Board 7, we value our service members as agents of change and leaders of this great country. They deserve nothing less than our support, as we celebrate them, today.”
