A three-vehicle, chain-reaction crash in Van Cortlandt Park is the latest motor vehicle accident to be reported on the Major Deegan Expressway.
Miraculously, according to law enforcement authorities, none of at least ten occupants involved in the crash were injured.

Police said the crash was reported on the left lane of the southbound Major Deegan Expressway, just beyond Exit 11 at East 233rd Street. A fire department official reported that the crash took place at 4:42 p.m. on Sunday, March 22.

They said the incident closed the left and center lanes, slowing traffic for miles into Westchester County. The fire department official said the crash was cleared and the highway was reopened at 9:51 p.m.

According to one police official, Vehicle #1, a white minivan with several child occupants, was “stopped due to traffic” when Vehicle #3, a black SUV, struck Vehicle #2, a white van, which then crashed into Vehicle #1. “All parties refused medical attention on scene,” the police spokesperson said.

As reported, two people were hospitalized following a single-vehicle car accident in the Norwood section of the Bronx the same day, march 22, and on Tuesday, March 17, St. Patrick’s Day, as reported, three people were hospitalized following a two-vehicle car crash on West Gun Hill Road also in Norwood.

With collision investigations, the NYPD handles all criminal aspects of the investigation, while NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) reviews the street design at the locations of such crashes.

Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7.
The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts.
The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
