Police said a man is in stable condition after he was found with a gunshot would to the head in the Wakefield section of The Bronx. Some media outlets are reporting the man is a police officer.

An NYPD spokesperson said that on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at around 11.11 a.m., police responded to a 911 call regarding shots fired inside 4111 Laconia Avenue, which is the address for the 47th Precinct.

“Upon arrival, officers observed an adult male, unconscious and unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head,” the spokesperson said, adding that EMS responded and transported the aided man to NYC Health & Hospitals/Jacobi in stable condition.

At least one Bronx resident said they could hear a helicopter over Jacobi Medical Center in Morris Park at around midday on Tuesday.

A Citizens’ App user posted the same day that a shooting had taken place at the address provided by the NYPD spokesperson above. They added that police were at the scene. In another post, it was reported that police said an NYPD officer had been shot outside a police precinct and that he was being transported to a hospital.

According to another Citizens’ App post, it was reported that at least one aviation unit was at the scene.

Norwood News asked the NYPD if the victim was a police officer, if the incident took place inside or outside the precinct and if more than one person was involved in the shooting incident. We did not receive an immediate response.

The investigation is ongoing.

One Norwood News reader, Kay Cardona, later said she read a media report of a 22-year-old rookie cop who had reportedly attempted suicide in the locker room of the 47th Precinct at around 11 a.m. on the day in question. She said she had also seen a grey helicopter in the vicinity of Jacobi Hospital around noon. “There were traffic officers all over Williamsbridge Road at each intersection, police cruisers with lights flashing, unmarked vehicles with lights flashing,” she said. “I think six or seven total, heading east on Pelham Parkway.”

Editor’s Note: An earlier headline referred to this incident taking place in the Williamsbridge section of The Bronx. In fact, the address in question is located in Wakefield.
