A 19-year-old man from Fordham Manor and a 21-year-old man from Mt. Eden who were each driving different vehicles involved in a multiple-vehicle, early morning accident in the Wakefield section of The Bronx have died, police said.
According to the NYPD, on Monday, Aug. 11, at around 1.11 a.m., officers from the 47th Precinct responded to a 911 call regarding a motor vehicle collision on the southbound Bronx River Parkway at East 223rd Street.
Further investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that Vehicle #1, a black 2019 Mercedes Benz, was being driven by a 21-year-old man traveling southbound in the left lane along the Bronx River Parkway.
The squad also determined that Vehicle #2, a white 2015 Volkswagen GTI, being driven by a 21-year-old man was also traveling southbound on the Bronx River Parkway in the center lane when Vehicle #1 attempted to pass Vehicle #2, striking the left side rear of Vehicle #1 as it did so.
They said the impact caused Vehicle #2 to lose control and veer off the roadway, striking the guardrail before coming to a stop. “After the initial impact with vehicle #2, vehicle #1 also veered to the right entering the right lane striking both vehicle #3, a 2023 Taizhou motorcycle, being driven by a 21-year-old male, and vehicle #4, a 2023 Taizhou motorcycle being driven by a 19-year-old man.
They said both Vehicle #3 and Vehicle #4 were in the right hand lane riding side by side. “EMS responded and transported the 21-year-old male to NYC Health and Hospitals/Jacobi where he was pronounced deceased,” police said. We have asked the NYPD if it was the 21-year-old of Vehicle 1, 2 or 3 and will await an update.
“The 23-year-old male was transported by private means to Montefiore Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased,” police added. “The investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.”
They said Mauricio Neyra Yuyes, 21, of White Plains, NY was arrested the same day at 8.27 a.m. within the confines of the 47th Precinct, and was charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter, two counts of driving while intoxicated, and two counts of driving with impaired ability.
The identities of the deceased are Enrique Martinez, 21, of Mt. Eden, The Bronx and Manuel Amarantepenalo, 19, of Fordham Manor, The Bronx.
Police said with collision investigations, the NYPD handles all criminal aspects of the investigation, while NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) reviews the street design at the locations of such crashes.
