Norwood News received a report of a fire at 50 E 212th Street in Norwood on Saturday, March 5.

Verified video from the Citizen’s App shows at least one fire truck on the street intersecting with Rochambeau Avenue in the neighborhood.

We reached out to the FDNY for more information, and a fire department official confirmed that the alert was raised at 5.08 p.m. on Saturday at the referenced location due to the smell of smoke. It was discovered that food had been left on the stove.

On Sunday, March 5, the FDNY confirmed there were no injuries.

The City Council announced in December 2021 that it would be voting on draft bill, Int. 2265-B, sponsored by former City Council Member Laurie Cumbo of Brooklyn and now Commissioner of New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, which gives landlords of units covered by Local Law 117 the option of providing tenants either with stove knob covers or replacement locking stove knobs at the tenants’ option.

Local Law 117 amended the housing maintenance code to require the provision of stove knob covers to tenants of multiple dwellings in which a child under the age of six resides. The bill gives tenants the choice of getting either stove knob covers or permanent self-locking stove knobs.

The latest bill also requires landlords to keep records of outreach to tenants regarding the provision of either stove knob covers or replacement locking stove knobs. The bill was adopted on Jan. 15, 2022.

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly referenced 112th Street. We apologize for this error.
