A 37-year-old man has been arrested on murder charges after a 48-year-old man was killed in the Morris Heights section of The Bronx on Saturday night, Nov. 8.
Police said that on Saturday at around 8.52 p.m., officers from the 46th Precinct received a 911 call regarding an unconscious male inside 1851 Phelan Place, just south of the University Heights section of The Bronx.

“Upon arrival, officers were informed that a 48-year-old male was assaulted and struck multiple times in the head and body with a metal object,” a police spokesperson said. “The victim was transported by EMS to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.”
Police said a person of interest was taken into custody, and the investigation remains ongoing. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending proper family notification.
On Sunday, Nov. 9, pursuant to an ongoing investigation, police said Anthony Mawuena, 37, of 1851 Phelan Place, Bronx, was arrested the same day at 1.36 p.m. in the confines of the 46th Precinct, which covers some or all of the neighborhoods of Fordham, University Heights, Morris Heights, and Mount Hope. They said he was charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon. He is presumed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
Norwood News visited the location of the murder, a men’s shelter, on Sunday night, Nov. 9, and spoke to some of the residents, some of whom are working and who live there. Some of the residents alleged the man who carried out the killing had mental health issues and one said it took place while the victim had been sleeping. One man alleged the perpetrator flew into a rage, broke a locker and used a metal part of the locker to bludgeon the victim.
Another resident alleged the incident took place in a dorm room what slept around 6 people and that others including the shelter security were afraid to intervene. Norwood News attempted to speak to the security of the building but they declined to comment. More to follow.
