Fire operations were still ongoing early on Monday morning in the Fordham Manor section of The Bronx after fourteen people were injured in a significant residential fire the previous night.

 

An FDNY spokesperson said the department received a call at 7.24 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, for a report of a fire at 2462 Devoe Terrace, a two-family dwelling according to City records, located between Webb Avenue and West 190th Street.

The spokesperson said the fire extended to 2460 and 2464 Devoe Terrace and that 44 units comprising 198 FDNY and EMS personnel responded to the scene.

 

Of the 14 injured people, the spokesperson said one red tag firefighter was transported to NY Presbyterian-Allen Pavilion hospital, one orange tag EMT was transported to Jacobi Medical Center, three yellow tag firefighters were transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, and one green tag pediatric civilian was transported to Montefiore Medical Center (which has a children’s hospital).

The spokesperson said there were four additional green tag firefighters affected, adding that one refused medical attention, one was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, two EMTs refused medical attention, and one EMT was transported to Lincoln Medical Center.

 

The condition and description of the injured were unknown. The spokesperson said that hazmat units were requested at the scene “for batteries.” We asked if e-bikes were discovered at the scene and did not receive an immediate response.

 

As reported, the Setting Consumer Standards for Lithium-Ion Batteries Act advanced in the U.S. House of Representatives in May, as announced by Rep. Ritchie Torres (NY-15) who sponsored the legislation.

According to City records, there are no open complaints or violations recorded with NYC Department of Housing, Preservation & Development in respect of the property which appears to be privately owned by a Bronx-based individual.

 

We were informed that FDNY fire marshals are investigating the cause. Norwood News has reached out to the Red Cross of Greater NY to ask for details of presumed displaced residents. Frederic Klein, regional communications manager, replied, saying in part, “The American Red Cross has registered four households (15 individuals) for emergency assistance, such as temporary lodging and financial assistance.’

 

He added, “Any residents impacted by this fire who have not connected with the Red Cross and who need help with their recovery should call 1-877-RED CROSS (877-733-2767) and select Option 1.”

 

A press conference was held at the site of the fire later on Monday, June 23, with New York City Fire Commissioner Ben Tucker, NYC Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry.

FDNY officials are reminding drivers not to block fire hydrants to prevent delays connecting fire hoses to hydrants. As reported, two people were killed after a fire engulfed a Buddhist temple on Anthony Avenue in Fordham Heights on Feb. 12, and fire officials said their rescue efforts were hampered by a car parked in front of a fire hydrant across the street from the blaze.
