UPDATE Alleged Pimps, Former Hotel Employees Charged in Child Sex Trafficking Ring

THE 7 DAYS HOTEL, located at 2338 Bruckner Boulevard in the Unionport section of The Bronx, is the alleged location of a sex trafficking operation identified by law enforcement as operating on or about August, 2019 through November 2022. It is not the first time the hotel has made news for such alleged operations.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark and New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell announced on Thursday, April 6, that six men, three alleged pimps, and the manager, front desk clerk, and security guard at a Bronx hotel, have been charged with a host of offenses, including enterprise corruption, sex trafficking of a child, and promoting prostitution, and two of the alleged pimps were also charged with rape.

Clark said the defendants, Akeem Lee, 34; Marvin Flint, 32;  Anthony Reyes, 31; Golam Rabbani, 27; Robert Olaguibel, 45; and Patrick Walker, 51, were variously charged in an 80-count indictment for enterprise corruption, sex trafficking, compelling prostitution, promoting prostitution, intimidating a victim or witness, conspiracy, endangering the welfare of a child, falsifying business records, and other related charges.

In the context of the announcement, Clark said, “This scheme involves brutal pimps and hotel employees who allegedly were paid to look away from the despicable acts of degradation against teenage girls and facilitate them.” She added, “The 7 Days Hotel allegedly profited from the human trafficking of girls and young women, and now employees will be held accountable. Hotels should be regulated in a manner where they cannot host criminal activity for years without bearing responsibility.”

Walker, Reyes, Rabbani and Lee were arraigned on April 3, before Bronx Supreme Court Justice Lawrence Busching. Lee was remanded in custody, and Reyes had bail set in the amounts of $10,000 cash/ $50,000 bond. They are due back in court on May 18. Flint was arraigned on April 4, and remanded in custody. Olaguibel was arrested in Pennsylvania and has not been arraigned yet.

Norwood News asked the district attorney’s office on what basis bail was set for Reyes, given the seriousness of the related crimes, and whether the prosecution objected to the setting of bail for Reyes. A spokesperson for the Bronx DA said an unnamed assistant district attorney (ADA) had asked for Reyes to be remanded in custody.

The spokesperson added that when the judge set bail, the ADA asked that there be an examination of surety, meaning a hearing would take place to make sure the money put up for bail was legitimate. She said the judge granted that when he set the bail. The spokesperson added that the ADA had asked for high bail for the hotel employees. The judge released them on their own recognizance (no bail).

According to the investigation by the NYPD Vice Human Trafficking Team and the Bronx District Attorney’s Human Trafficking Unit, the conspiracy took place from on or about August, 2019 through November 2022, among members or associates of a prostitution organization which operated inside of the 7 Days Hotel located at 2338 Bruckner Boulevard in the Unionport section of The Bronx. As reported, it is not the first time the hotel has been allegedly used as a location for sex trafficking.

According to the investigation, one of the girls engaged in prostitution for the co-conspirators starting when she was 14 years old, continuing until she was 17 years old. According to the investigation and related investigations, Lee allegedly hit and choked her and threatened to kill her if she went to the police, and approximately 16 girls and young women were trafficked by the co-conspirators. Out of the 16, seven were underage.

According to the prosecution, an undercover NYPD officer posed as a pimp. He and alleged trafficker, Flint, were given discounted room rates in exchange for cash tips to hotel employees. According to the investigation, Olaguibel, a manager; Rabbani, a front desk clerk; and Walker, a security guard, allegedly facilitated prostitution by failing to check their identification or those of the sex workers; and failing to post inside of the hotel the human trafficking victims’ hotline number, as required by New York State Law. The defendants allegedly tipped each other off if law enforcement was present at the hotel in order to evade arrest.

For her part, Sewell said, “The NYPD and our law enforcement partners share an unwavering commitment to protecting the survivors of sex trafficking, one of society’s most heinous crimes, and we will continue to ensure that anyone who seeks to profit through the abuse and exploitation of other people, especially our youth, is held fully accountable.”

She added, “I thank and commend all of the investigators in the NYPD’s Vice Enforcement Division Major Case Section and the prosecutors in the Bronx District Attorney’s Office for their tireless efforts in this important case.”

Last August, Norwood News reported how a missing 17-year-old girl was located and suspected of being sex trafficked inside a Wakefield hotel and how certain nonprofit organizations who work to assist victims of sex-trafficking do not have the necessary resources or protection needed to carry out what can be extremely dangerous work.

Last June, a Bronx man was charged with alleged rape, kidnapping and sex trafficking of a teen, while another Bronx man who had been charged with sex trafficking, rape and attempted strangulation was released on bail. In June 2021, we reported that three Bronx men and a woman were charged with sex trafficking a child along with other charges and in February 2021, we reported that a Bronx man who had already been charged for sex-trafficking a Brooklyn teen was charged with sex trafficking a woman.

We previously reported on the work carried out to curb sexual and domestic violence, and sex trafficking by the nonprofit, Freedom Youth Family Justice Center, as it expanded its services in The Bronx. The center has since extended its operations to Mount Vernon to meet the need and given the situation is seen as something of a silent epidemic in The Bronx and beyond.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Joseph Russo and Jacquelynn Guzman of the Human Trafficking Unit, under the supervision of Stephen Knoepfler, chief  of the Human Trafficking Unit, and overall supervision of Adrienne Giunta, deputy chief of the Special Victims Division, and Joseph Muroff, chief of the Special Victims Division.

Clark also thanked trial preparation assistant, Jessica Walmsley, for her assistance, as well as NYPD Detective Denis Regimbal and Lieutenant Amy Capogna of the NYPD Human Trafficking Team.

A person arrested and charged with a crime is deemed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
