A 22-year-old man has died following a two-vehicle collision on the Cross Bronx Expressway.

Police said that on Wednesday, April 19, at around 1.43 a.m., officers from the 46th Precinct responded to a 911 call regarding a motor vehicle collision on the southbound Cross Bronx Expressway and Major Deegan Expressway.

“Upon arrival, officers observed a 19-year-old male, conscious and alert with minor injuries and a 22-year-old male, unconscious and unresponsive with severe head and body trauma,” an NYPD spokesperson said.

“EMS responded to the location and transported the aided males to St. Barnabas Hospital, where the 19-year-old male was listed in stable condition, and the 22-year-old male was later pronounced deceased.”

Police said a preliminary investigation by the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that a 2015 BMW sedan traveling westbound on the Cross Bronx Expressway, in the vicinity of the exits for the Major Deegan Expressway, attempted to pass a 2021 Kenworth Tractor-Trailer, driven by a 52-year-old man who was traveling in the same direction.

Police said the BMW collided with the rear of the truck and became pinned between the truck and the concrete divider. “The male operator of the tractor-trailer was not injured and remained on scene,” the spokesperson said. “The NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is investigating.”

The deceased was later identified as Sulayman Njie of Parkchester, The Bronx.

NYPD handles all criminal aspects of collision investigations, while NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) reviews the street design at the locations of such crashes.
