Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced Friday, March 27, that three youths have been indicted for murder, manslaughter, assault, and other related charges in the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Christopher Redding in the Kingsbridge section of The Bronx last month, and the wounding of two other teens during the same incident.

“A promising boy was cut down by a bullet and another boy and a girl were wounded as they ran from gunfire near a busy intersection at 5 p.m., Clark said. “The defendants are 17 and 19 years old. This is another heartrending loss of our young people to death, trauma and prison. We must stem the flow of illegal guns.”

 

As reported, police announced on Friday, March 27, that two additional people were arrested following Christopher’s murder. It followed a prior announcement by the NYPD on Feb. 14 that they had arrested one unnamed teenager following the triple shooting in which Christopher was fatally shot, and the two other surviving teens were hospitalized.

 

At a subsequent vigil following Christopher’s death, his parents had called on on those responsible to turn themselves in. One additional female suspect is still being sought in connection to the incident, according to police.

 

On Friday, Bronx District Attorney Clark said the defendants, Anthony Caballero, 19, a previously unnamed 17-year-old, and Zion Martinez, 19, all of The Bronx, have been indicted on second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, two counts of attempted murder in the second degree, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree reckless endangerment.

According to officials from the Bronx DA’s office, Anthony Caballero and Zion Martinez were arraigned Friday by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Pamela Goldsmith and remain in custody. They said the 17-year-old was arraigned on March 9 by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Gayle Roberts and also remains in custody. They said all three are due back in court on June 18.

 

According to the investigation, and as reported at the time, on Feb. 11, at around 5.10 p.m., at the intersection of Broadway and West 238th Street, the three allegedly acted in concert with each other, in that they discharged a firearm down West 238th Street, fatally striking Christopher Redding, 16, and striking a 13-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy as they and others were attempting to run away. Christopher suffered a gunshot wound to the back, and the surviving victims suffered gunshot wounds to their legs.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Morgan Dolan, senior homicide counsel of the Homicide Bureau, under the supervision of Burim Namani, deputy chief of the Homicide Bureau, Christine Scaccia, chief of the Homicide Bureau, and under the overall supervision of James Brennan, deputy chief of the Trial Division and Theresa Gottlieb, chief of the Trial Division.

 

Clark thanked Trial Preparation Assistant Johnathan Campa, NYPD Detective Christopher White of the 50th Precinct Detective Squad, NYPD Detective Jonathan Burke of Bronx Homicide Squad, and NYPD Detective Edward Barrett, Bronx Warrant Section, for their work on the investigation.

 

As reported, a number of anti-gun violence rallies have been held in recent weeks in the north Bronx following a spate of recent shootings, which unlike the general downward trend seen across the City, have gone up in The Bronx.

 

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch recently announced that the borough would be split into two distinct patrol borough commands to meet the needs of the community.
