The Bronx Toastmasters Club of Riverdale will hold a virtual “Open House” meeting on Wednesday, May 27 at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom Video Conferencing. The  committee is asking anyone interested in joining the meeting to RSVP to bronxtoastmastersclub@gmail.com.

The club is an affiliate of Toastmasters International, a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs. Headquartered in Englewood, Colo., the organization’s membership exceeds 358,000 in more than 16,800 clubs in 143 countries. Since 1924, Toastmasters International has helped people from diverse backgrounds become more confident speakers, communicators, and leaders.

The Bronx Toastmasters Club of Riverdale has been serving the community in the Northwest Bronx for 21 years, and meetings are free for guests. Members of the club have provided testimony over the years about how the club has helped with their respective self-development.

“Before Toastmasters, I didn’t really have the confidence to talk with other people and share myself,” said Sara Safari, a teacher and humanitarian, who, through her involvement with the club, earned the distinction of attaining the “distinguished toastmaster” or DTM title. “After Toastmasters, I got myself back. I got confidence back,” she said.

Meanwhile, Roger Caesar, owner and president of Caesar Transport, Inc., holds dual toastmaster titles of Advanced Communicator Bronze (ACB) and Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB). “I ran a company, and it was very challenging for me to communicate one-on-one or in small groups,” he said. “Because of my Toastmasters training, I am a more confident leader.” Caesar was a semi-finalist at the organization’s 2015 International Speech Contest.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
