Applications Open for Brandon Hendricks Scholarship as Najhim Luke Found Guilty for Fatal Shooting of Basketball Star

Applications are open for high school students for the Annual Brandon Hendricks (College) Scholarship. The news comes as Najhim Luke, 22, was found guilty for the fatal shooting of the late Brandon Hendricks, who was fatally shot in crossfire at just 17 years of age in June 2020 in the Morris Heights section of The Bronx. Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark’s office announced on Monday, Jan. 30, that Luke, who, as reported, was arrested and later charged in September 2020 in connection with the incident, was found guilty on one count of manslaughter and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

UPDATE 70 Guns Turned in at Wakefield Gun Buyback Event Honoring Brandon Hendricks

Applications are open for a scholarship program for local Bronx youth headed to college. The Bronx Rising Initiative (BRI) has opened applications for the Brandon Hendricks Scholarship, offering $5,000 to multiple, high school seniors from The Bronx who have recently been admitted to college. Bronx Man Indicted for Murder of 17-Year-Old Rising Basketball Star, Brandon Hendricks

Morrisania: Community Rises Up to Save Streets from Gun Violence

On Monday, Aug. 24, NYPD Police Commissioner Dermot Shea announced that, going forward, additional police officers would be rostered at the weekends in an effort to curb the increased rates of gun violence seen across the Bronx, and across the City in recent months. The NYPD reported that 44 percent of shootings in the last month occurred on Saturdays and Sundays.   For the week ending Aug. 23, murder in the Bronx, rose by 400 percent compared to the same period last year. In the 52 precinct alone, two murders were reported in July within six days of each other.
