Storm Prediction Center Issues “Severe Thunderstorm Watch” for New York until 2.30 p.m. Nov. 13

The National Weather Service (NWS) Storm Predictor Center issued a severe thunderstorm watch on Nov. 13 at 12:24 p.m. which remains in effect until 7 p.m. (Nov. 13).

The National Weather Service (NWS) storm predictor center issued a severe thunderstorm watch on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 12:24 p.m., which is effective immediately and remains in effect until 2.30 p.m. (Nov. 13). It was initially predicted to last until 7 p.m. but was later changed to end at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday. 

 

The description of a “severe thunderstorm watch 549” was provided for the New York State counties of Bronx, Dutchess, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester. 

Notify NYC also issued a citywide alert regarding the storm, giving tips on how to prepare. See attached screenshot below.

The National Weather Service later provided the following additional information:

“At 1.48 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over Sayreville, or near Perth Amboy, moving northeast at 50 mph.

HAZARD…60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.
SOURCE…Radar indicated.
IMPACT…Minor hail damage to vehicles is possible. Expect wind damage to trees and power lines.

Huguenot and Clark around 155 PM EST.
Linden and Oakwood around 200 PM EST.
Elizabeth and Todt Hill around 205 PM EST.
Newark and Bayonne around 210 PM EST.
Jersey City and Hoboken around 215 PM EST.
Passaic and Rutherford around 220 PM EST.
Mott Haven and Hackensack around 225 PM EST.
East Tremont and Bergenfield around 230 PM EST.

INSTRUCTIONS: For your protection, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. Large hail and damaging winds and continuous cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Move indoors immediately. Lightning is one of nature`s leading killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.”
