NYC Parks Bronx Borough Commissioner Jessy Aponte joined District 14 City Council Member Pierina Sanchez on Friday, June 2, to celebrate the installation of brand-new backboards at the Fordham Landing Basketball Courts in the Fordham Manor section of The Bronx.

The backboard installation was made possible by $13,150 in funding from Sanchez, according to NYC Parks. The department later installed the backboards on a total of five courts, four full-sized courts and one junior court, officials said.

NYC Parks acquired the Fordham Landing Playground site on Dec. 12, 1950, in conjunction with the construction of the Major Deegan Expressway, officials said. The park is one of six, ranging in area from about one-tenth of an acre to about four acres, bordering the Major Deegan Expressway.

According to NYC Parks, the popular ballfield at Fordham Landing Playground was renovated in 1997 under a $473,000 capital project funded by then-Council Member Israel Ruiz, Jr.
