Bronx Notes: Community Board 7 Meeting Tonight

Community Board 7 will hold its general board meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at the Bedford Park Senior Center, 243 E. 204th St. For more information, call (718) 933-5660 or visit bronxcb7.info. This will be the board’s first meeting without District Manager Fernando Tirado who took leave last week (his last official day is Oct. 19) and is starting a new job in Long Island. The board will probably put together a search committee and discuss filling the position during tonight’s meeting.

North Central Bronx Hospital, 3424 Kossuth Ave., offers free group counseling and nicotine replacement therapy for smokers looking to quit. Crime Watch: Man Murdered on Decatur Ave. in Norwood

On Saturday afternoon, at about 1:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a male shot inside 3347 Decatur Ave. When they arrived, they discovered Jesus Avando, 26, with a bullet wound in his head. Avando, who lived at 3347 Decatur Ave., was pronounced dead at the scene. The Decatur building is located between East 209th Street and East Gun Hill Road.

Bronx Notes: Interactive Movie Night at Bronx Documentary Center

“FELA KUTI: MUSIC IS THE WEAPON,” the definitive film on Fela, the Black President, the creator of Afro-beat. Shot in Lagos at the peak of his career in 1982, this documentary contains interviews with Fela detailing his thoughts on politics, Pan-Africanism, music and religion, alongside unpublished versions of songs like ITT, Army Arrangement and Power Show. In this screening proper cinema watching, singing, dancing and other forms of engagement are expected from the audience while simultaneously viewing the film. This experience aims to generate an immediate response and encourage dialogue and interaction around the themes that are raised in the film.

Bronx Notes: Help Clean Tree Pits on Gun Hill Road

Local resident and tree lover Janice Flood is leading a tree pit cleaning effort on Gun Hill Road this Saturday morning, Oct. 13, and needs people to help out. The crew will be meeting at Bainbridge Avenue and Gun Hill Road at 10 a.m. and will be working until 1 p.m. If you want to join, just show up. Bronx Notes: Bronx Museum Celebrates 40th Anniversary

This Friday, Oct. 12, the Bronx Museum is celebrating its 40th anniversary and the public is invited to celebrate with them. The event will feature a screening of video art provided by Manuel de Santaren’s collection. Other activities will include a silent art auction and film screenings, including the documentary “From Mambo to Hip Hop.”
