District 14 Bronx Council Member Pierina Sanchez and anti-gun violence interrupters, Bronx Rises Against Gun Violence (B.R.A.G.), a program of the Good Shepherd Services nonprofit, Bronx Rises Against Gun Violence (B.R.A.G.) are hosting a single-round basketball tournament on Saturday, Aug 6 at noon at P.S. 279, 2100 Walton Avenue, in Fordham Heights to celebrate unity and non-violence with food, games, and music, in response to two shootings that occurred in front of council member’s constituency office.

Amidst increased rates of gun violence, this basketball tournament will offer a much-needed alternative for youth in The Bronx to convene in a fun, positive, and supportive environment. Additionally, as one of the districts with the lowest acreages of green spaces, this event will allow members of the 14th council district, which spans Kingsbridge, Fordham, University Heights, Mount Eden and Mount Hope, to get outside and be active.

A major new exhibition at the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust has opened. The Holocaust: What Hate Can Do offers an expansive and timely presentation of Holocaust history told through personal stories, objects, photos, and film—many on view for the first time. The 12,000-square-foot exhibition features over 750 original objects and survivor testimonies from the Museum’s collection. Together, these objects tell a global story through a local lens, rooted in objects donated by survivors and their families, many of whom settled in New York and nearby places. The museum is located at 36 Battery Place, in Manhattan. For more information, visit mjhnyc.org or call (646) 437 4202.

In keeping with the Museum’s mission to educate people of all ages and backgrounds on the broad tapestry of Jewish life before, during, and after the Holocaust, the exhibition features countless beginnings, middles, and too many endings that make up the stories of The Holocaust: What Hate Can Do. Each room, and each object, contains generations of experiences and information about who Jews are, what sustains Jewish communities, and what life was like during the period of European modernization, World War I, and the political and social movements that brought about the rise of the Nazi Party. Within the Holocaust experiences of legalized racism and fascism, pogroms, ghettos, mass murder, and concentration camps are instances of personal and global decision-making, escape, resistance, and resilience, and ultimately liberation and new beginnings.

Elected officials, City agency partners, community-based organizations and foundations relaunched the citywide “Saturday Night Lights” program on Saturday, March 26 in Mott Haven. The groups work together to keep 100 gyms across the City open for free, high-quality sports programs for kids on Saturday nights, ensuring no indoor gyms are closed on these nights – the time when they are needed most by kids in city communities. Click on the following link to watch a video extract of the Saturday Night Lights Relaunch, where Mayor Eric Adams can be seen observing some of the kids in action.

Each Saturday evening, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., children and youth, aged 11 to 18, are able to enjoy an array of indoor sports, including basketball, soccer, volleyball, dance, martial arts and more. According to the organizers, a key component of the program is bringing cops and kids together. Teams of youth coordination officers from NYPD precincts are at each of the 100 gymnasiums every Saturday night, helping to coach, and joining members of various community based organizations to interact with young people and help make a lasting and positive impact in their lives.

Mosholu Montefiore Community Center, located at 3450 Dekalb Avenue, is the local venue for the program in Norwood, while the Fordham Heights program is run at 2255 Webster Avenue, Bronx, NY 10457. For a list of all venues, scan the QR code in the below flier. (If you cannot access the QR code from the attached flyer, click on this pdf link SNL QR Palm Card v1 revised.)

As reported, an additional 25 city gyms and an additional $1.25 million investment in the Saturday Night Lights program was announced on July 9 to ensure public gyms will continue to remain open Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. through Aug. 20, and during the school year from September 10, 2022 through June 24, 2023. No ID or registration is required. Visit Parks’ Outdoor Pools page for more information, and check out the Cool It! NYC map for cooling features in every neighborhood – including pools, spray showers, drinking fountains, and more.

Residents are reminded that sprinklers are also available from FDNY for street fire hydrants to allow some water to be sprayed onto the street, a practice which is legal, as confirmed to Norwood News by NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). However, leaving a fire hydrant open “full throttle” is illegal, since it may result in the FDNY being unable to respond to a fire if a fire hydrant is emptied. Blocking a fire hydrant is also illegal.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students. As you navigate this website, please let us know if you discover any glitches or if you have any suggestions. We’d love to hear from you. You can send e-mails to norwoodnews@norwoodnews.org or call us anytime (718) 324-4998.
