Free Bronx Week Finale

Culminating a week of events in the Bronx for the borough’s annual Bronx Week celebration, all are invited to attend the free Grand Finale to be held on Mosholu Parkway and Bainbridge Avenue on May 17: Noon – Parade featuring marching bands, celebrities, schools, and more with a reviewing stand at Mosholu Parkway East at Van Cortlandt Avenue; noon to 6 p.m. – Bronx Food & Arts & Music Festival which includes free health screenings and information on health insurance at Mosholu Parkway and Bainbridge Avenue; noon to 6 p.m. – Grand Finale Concert: Visitors can dance to the sounds of hip-hop, R&B, salsa, bachata, bomba y plena and more.

The Bronx Library Center, 310 E. Kingsbridge Rd., presents Matuto in Concert, featuring Brazilian folk forms, American bluegrass, and Louisiana jams, May 16 at 2:30 p.m.; and Take the 4 Train, concert performed by the Celia Cruz H.S. Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. invites the public to a series of free events during Bronx Week: May 14, 7 to 8:30 p.m. – Yoga at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, 1040 Grand Concourse (free admission and bar); May 15 – Health Day, at Joyce Kilmer Park and Lou Gehrig Plaza at Bronx Borough Hall, 161st Street and the Grand Concourse, variety of fitness exercises (8 a.m. to noon); at Montefiore’s East Garden, 111 E. 210th St., free screenings (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.); and at Morris Heights Health Center, 57-69 W. Burnside Ave., health screenings, salsa, zumba, kids aerobics and face painting (2 to 4 p.m.); May 16 – Flagging of Graves, to volunteer to place flags on graves at Woodlawn Cemetery of those who served our nation (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; includes picnic lunch); and May 17 at 11 a.m. – Bronx Walk of Fame inductions on the steps of the Bronx County Building, Grand Concourse at East 161st Street where Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. will unveil street signs bearing their names. PS x33, The Timothy Dwight School, 2424 Jerome Ave., holds its annual Health Fair, May 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in its schoolyard. Wave Hill, a Bronx oasis at 675 W. 252nd St. in Riverdale, offers Family Art Projects: Shield Me With a Turtle Shell, to make a turtle shell backpack from fabric and leather scraps, followed by a slow turtle-like parade, May 16 and 17; and WH Celebration Parade, to make flower shakers and leafy costumes, May 23 and 24; both in WH House from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Also included is a Nature Presentation: Let’s Talk Turtles, to learn about turtles and meet some live ones, May 17 at 1 p.m. in the WH House. Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
