The New York State Department of Labor announced on Monday, Feb. 7, that the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) for Heat & Frost Insulators, Local Union #12 A.J.E.F., will conduct a recruitment drive from March 7 through March 18, 2022 for 20 insulation and asbestos worker apprentices.

DOL officials said the 20 openings listed for the apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions – the Long Island and New York City regions of the state.

They said this is a limited-application recruitment drive, and only 200 applications will be distributed, on a first-come, first-serve basis. The recruitment will be offered for 10 business days, or until 200 applications have been issued, whichever comes first.

To obtain an application, DOL officials said applicants must email their request, along with their first and last name and date of birth to Local12AJEF@gmail.com, between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the recruitment period. Requests received outside of this time period, on the weekend, or prior to or after the recruitment dates will not get an application. Only one request should be submitted.

According to the DOL, application forms will be distributed by email to applicants, and will include instructions for the next steps to be taken to return completed applications. Applicants will need to print and complete the forms before returning them. DOL officials said each applicant must arrive at their specified appointed time and date, to return the application and take an assessment online. They added that anyone arriving late will be dropped from further consideration.

DOL officials said applicants who do not have access to a printer may want to check with their local library or New York State Department of Labor career center. A $25 testing fee will be charged to each applicant. A money order for $25, made out to Local 12 AJEF, must be returned with the candidate’s application. Applicants should note that the fee may be waived upon request. Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.

DOL officials said that testing fees and required documents must be included with the application. If not included, the application will be considered void.

The hiring committee requires that applicants:

  • must be at least 18 years of age;
  • must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED);
  • provide a copy of the high school diploma and transcripts, or an official copy of GED/TASC test results and official transcripts with the completed application;
  • must pass a physical exam, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship;
  • must take and pass a certified drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship;
  • once enrolled, must be willing to be drug tested both yearly and randomly, at the expense of the sponsor;
  • must take an aptitude test administered by Apprentice Performance Solutions;
  • must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and required classes at the approved school;
  • must provide their own tools and work clothes, at an approximate cost of $500;
  • must provide a military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.

For further information, applicants should contact JATC for Heat & Frost Insulators Local Union #12 on (718) 784-1899. Additional job search assistance can be obtained at the applicants’ local New York State Department of Labor career center at https://dol.ny.gov/career-centers.

Apprenticeship programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
