NYPL Libraries Revert to Phase 1 Operations Amid Rising COVID-19 Cases

THE BRONX LIBRARY CENTER (pictured) has been chosen to spread greater awareness on mental health services as part of ThriveNYC’s “Spaces to Thrive” initiative announced Dec. 5.

On Nov. 9, the New York Public Library (NYPL) had introduced a Phase 2 opening service, providing desktop computer usage to library users, limited browsing at 14 branch libraries, as well as in-person appointments and grab-and-go pick up at research libraries.

However, on Monday, Nov. 16, representatives said that after careful examination of the recent unfavorable trends in COVID-19 cases across New York City, NYPL made the difficult decision to roll back to a Phase 1 opening service, system-wide. On Nov. 25, NYPL closed three libraries on Staten Island, following the State’s designation of the impacted areas as orange zones.

As a result of the return to Phase 1 opening, all open branch libraries in the City will return to grab-and-go service for holds, pick ups, and returns only, with patrons checking out requested materials at pick up. Research grab-and-go services and in person appointments will also be paused.

“We will continue to operate Phase 1 service in all Yellow Zones, including northern Staten Island, parts of the Bronx, and northern Manhattan, as we are confident these services can be provided safely at this time,” NYPD representatives wrote. “These difficult decisions are the result of our continued prioritization of the health and safety of our staff and the public above all else. We continue to monitor all of the guidance, the trends, and our own operations in weighing and reevaluating these decisions carefully.”

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts.
