An NYPD police officer has been arrested following an accident which occurred in the 50th precinct which covers the neighborhoods of Kingsbridge, Marble Hill, Spuyten Duyvil, Riverdale and Fieldston, including Wave Hill, a historic mansion and garden overlooking the Hudson River, and Van Cortlandt Park, one of the largest parks in New York City.

Police said on Wednesday, May 11, at approximately 5.40 a.m., off-duty police officer, Luis Tejada, 25,  was arrested and charged in relation to an accident during which the officer left the scene and made a false report regarding the incident.

Norwood News followed up with the NYPD to inquire about the number of vehicles involved in the incident, which police said took place in the 50th precinct, as well as how the accident occurred. An NYPD spokesperson responded, saying, “What they have here is that he was involved in a vehicle collision the day before, May 10, and his arrest stems from that.”

Asked what was the false report, the spokesperson said he had nothing further on file, adding, “Looks like truth was not told regarding the incident.” Asked if there was another vehicle involved in the incident, the NYPD official said, “Don’t have that, no.”

We contacted the Bronx District Attorney’s office in order to obtain a copy of the affidavit and were informed by a representative on Tuesday, May 17, “He got a DAT [desk appearance ticket], due back 5/31/22.”

A desk appearance ticket is an order issued by the police to appear in Criminal Court to respond to an accusation whereby a person has committed an offense.

According to police records, there is a police officer named Luis S Tejada assigned to the 33rd precinct which covers the northern Manhattan commercial strips of Broadway, Amsterdam and St. Nicholas Avenues. Tejada became a police officer in July 2018 and has made 32 misdemeanor arrests, 11 felony arrests and three infractions to date. He has been recognized for “excellent” and “meritorious” police duty. There are no records listed under his disciplinary history.

A person arrested and charged with a crime is deemed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
